.I already know the pope decided to make it so ...but that was in 1950?....Rather late late in the game.... What happened to all the centuries before...moreso what did Jesus have to say about this?

When is too late for you? After Scripture was closed? The Sadducees preached Sola Scriptura. Anyway as previous posts here have established the belief does go back to the first four centuries of the Church. If that is too late to the game then so is Augustine.
