Well, according to the Eastern Orthodox, the RRC IS the schismatic one. The EO claim THEY are the original church.
There is very little that divides Catholicism and Orthodoxy. The main issue standing in the way of reunification is the papacy. But we seem to be closer to reuniting than at any time since the great schism.
Regarding the schism, it's a matter of historical record that the line of popes can be traced back to St. Peter, so it's hard to see how the Catholic Church can be said to have split from Orthodoxy.
(I was always got a kick out of the Monty Python joke that the Catholic Church had broken off from the Church of England.)
