That’s true. It’s not my religion, so I don’t have a strong opinion, it’s just weird based on recent history to be seeing a new one so often.
The outlier was John Paul II, the 2nd longest reigning pope since St Peter, behind Pope Pius IX. At seven years, Pope Benedict’s reign was actually longer than average. Pope John Paul I lasted 33 days, Pope John XXIII lasted four years. But a few recent popes did have fairly long reigns, like Pope Pius XII (about 20 years), and Pope Paul VI (about 15 years).
