I'm sure Tchaikovsky was Russian Orthodox. His 1812 Overture was written for the dedication of the Cathedral of Christ the Savior in Moscow in 1881. Incidentally, the cathedral was razed at the order of Joseph Stalin and rebuilt after the Soviet Union collapsed.
