Charity is a big part of salvation, or at least Christ says so. I realize some will disagree and they can take it up with Christ when he returns.
Matthew 25
The Final Judgment
31When the Son of Man comes in his glory, and all the angels with him, then he will sit on his glorious throne. 32Before him will be gathered all the nations, and he will separate people one from another as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats. 33And he will place the sheep on his right, but the goats on the left. 34Then the King will say to those on his right, Come, you who are blessed by my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world. 35For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me, 36I was naked and you clothed me, I was sick and you visited me, I was in prison and you came to me. 37Then the righteous will answer him, saying, Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you drink? 38And when did we see you a stranger and welcome you, or naked and clothe you? 39And when did we see you sick or in prison and visit you? 40And the King will answer them, Truly, I say to you, as you did it to one of the least of these my brothers,f you did it to me.
41Then he will say to those on his left, Depart from me, you cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels. 42For I was hungry and you gave me no food, I was thirsty and you gave me no drink, 43I was a stranger and you did not welcome me, naked and you did not clothe me, sick and in prison and you did not visit me. 44Then they also will answer, saying, Lord, when did we see you hungry or thirsty or a stranger or naked or sick or in prison, and did not minister to you? 45Then he will answer them, saying, Truly, I say to you, as you did not do it to one of the least of these, you did not do it to me. 46And these will go away into eternal punishment, but the righteous into eternal life.

Charity flows from salvation as a new nature. You don't work your way to salvation. To do so cheapens what Christ did, and does violence to the Gospel.
And Russians have never been known for grace and charity.

Marxism is anti-charity. Marxism is hatred,, violence, force, theft, mass murder, slavery, envy, jealousy. covetousness, ingratitude. I’m sure I left out some other nastiness.

I think most Christians here believe we should help the poor, widow and orphan. What most don’t agree with is people who don’t want to work and want to live off the hard work of others. Many times this is generational. This hurts not only the one who has to work to pay for their own family and those who live off others, it also harms those who don’t know the joy of working hard and making something of your own life, of not being dependent on others, but God.

I wish people would stop trying to tell others what the Pope meant. Let his words speak for himself. I recall John Paul II and Benedict did not need people interpreting their comments. They were quite clear. This pope has issues.

Yes, that is exactly what I believe the judgment is about, but I believe you can only give what is yours to give.
If a government takes from those who have and gives to the have not`s is that going to save any one?
Are the people in government going to be saved, I think not because it is wrong to steal, besides did they give? no they only redistributed it, they gave nothing of their self and got paid a good salary for doing it.
Are the people they took from going to be saved?, no because they gave nothing to no one, it was taken from them.
We are to give of our selves, even giving to some charity organization does not excuse us from doing what is right if we happen to run across some one who needs help.
Real charity can only be fully witnessed when people give it one on one and this is not always possible in a country where they are not free to do so.
We are living in a world where you might be thrown in jail for trying to help a lost child.
Most people would help a lost child but unless you know the law pretty well and also political correctness it may lead one to never try to help any one ever again.
I have never had this experience but have heard about them.
