“With all due respect, my brother-priests, I do not see the need for saying ‘good morning’

perhaps there is no "need," but truly, is it offensive? i remember a few years ago, i was at a Good Friday service in the late morning... a gal walked in very quietly, late... i think she was on a work break... she found a seat and the priest noticed her... he said, quite sternly, "you're late!" and then i think he realized how he came across and very kindly said, "you may have a seat."

when the service was over, and my two young sons and i were driving home, my youngest son, out of the blue, said, "you're late!" and my older son said, "you may have a seat." and then we all started laughing...

now when any of us is late, we go through this whole routine... "you're late! you may have a seat." :)

I would not call it offensive, but.... this how stuff gets started. Like the hand holding during the Our Father. Oh that annoys me! Any way. We are all supposed to be doing the same thing at the same time by the rubrics. If everyone would just follow the rubrics, we would have more order.

Funny story by the way. :)

It's not offensive in itself.

It's just part and parcel of the attitude of the priest who:

(1) Likes to add phrases to the collects and to personalize the responses; (2) Likes to drop parts of the order that he finds tedious or replace them with something else he likes better; (3) likes to give homilies about the funny thing that happened to him on vacation rather than about the Gospel reading; (4) likes to take the mic from the pulpit and wander around; (5) likes to deputize 15 extraordinary ministers to communicate 50 people while he sits in the sanctuary . . .

And all the other things we've come to dread.
