CATECHISM OF THE CATHOLIC CHURCH SECOND EDITION

PART ONE THE PROFESSION OF FAITH SECTION TWO THE PROFESSION OF THE CHRISTIAN FAITH

CHAPTER THREE I BELIEVE IN THE HOLY SPIRIT

ARTICLE 9 "I BELIEVE IN THE HOLY CATHOLIC CHURCH"

Paragraph 6. Mary - Mother of Christ, Mother of the Church

963 Since the Virgin Mary's role in the mystery of Christ and the Spirit has been treated, it is fitting now to consider her place in the mystery of the Church. "The Virgin Mary . . . is acknowledged and honored as being truly the Mother of God and of the redeemer. . . . She is 'clearly the mother of the members of Christ' . . . since she has by her charity joined in bringing about the birth of believers in the Church, who are members of its head."502 "Mary, Mother of Christ, Mother of the Church."503

I’ve always found the passage of Saul and Samuel (1st Sam 28:7-19) to be quite revealing regarding the communication of the living with those who are dead.

I suspect she is very dead, and very much aware every time somebody evokes her name. FWIW, I suspect part of her suffering is due to her being emulated as the “Queen of Heaven” instead of a more mildly recognized person in His direct family.

There’s a better question...What outside of Scriptures do you consider divine revelation, more importantly God Breathed?

Sorry. This is a hold in your hands book. The best I can do is provide the publisher, Zondervan and the Library of Congress catalog Card Number, 2010921761.

Maybe www.zondervan.com will have access to what you want, I don’t know.

I don’t think a live link is required if you are quoting an older document. But a bibliography type of source should suffice so one, if interested, can go to the library and look it up.

Jesus founded a faith with actual people — His apostles and disciples. Much of the book came years later.

The "book" existed in part BEFORE Jesus was incarnated. The rest was written not that long after He ascended and it contains ALL that Jesus taught of the Christian faith to those actual people. His Apostles and disciples ensured that the truth was written and preserved for all future generations and they were led by the Holy Spirit in exactly what should be written because it is the word of God. He gave us an objective and authoritative resource by which all claims to truth could be measured - up to and including those who later asserted they were the only authority.

It is better to trust in the LORD than to put confidence in man. (Psalm 118:8)

“but if you’re not Catholic what does it matter to you what Catholics believe?”

Yeah, cause we never see daily threads where Catholics parse and critique the beliefs of protestants. Sauce for the goose, is sauce for the gander.

basically the warning not to add or subtract from the Word of God, in Revelation.

i believe God gave us everything we need to know in this life to live well and receive forgiveness to live with Him in the next life. Do you think the bible is incomplete and requires additional revelations from God?

Mary is our mother by adoption. But she is the natural mother of God the Son. He is the fruit of her womb, Jesus.

Mary is our SISTER in Christ, not our mother. She is part of the Bride of Christ as are all believers in Jesus Christ. Mary is NOT the spouse of the Father nor of the Holy Spirit, either. She was married to Joseph, the foster father of Jesus and they both played a crucial role in the incarnation of the Son of God whereby ALL can be saved who receive Him by faith. Mary was the "God bearer", because, by her flesh, God the Son became a man, took on human flesh so that He could be the perfect sacrifice for our sins.

Mary is honored, because she was an honorable and faithful woman. She is an example of faith and steadfastness to ALL Christians. Mary was a good Jewish woman but she was NOT sinless - because ALL have sinned and fall short of the glory of God. (Romans 3:23) She, as do we all, must rely wholly upon the grace and mercy of God who makes us righteous through faith. She will join us at the Marriage Supper of the Lamb as the redeemed of Christ. Christ, alone, is exalted and ALL glory is His.

For this reason also, God highly exalted Him, and bestowed on Him the name which is above every name, so that at the name of Jesus EVERY KNEE WILL BOW, of those who are in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and that every tongue will confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. (Philippians 2:9-11)

It isn’t an older document (2010) but hazarding a conservative guess, I’d say the list of thirty two contributors from various theological seminaries and assorted universities have at least three hundred years of bible study combined.

The library is a good idea.

“It doesn’t matter to you that an entire church is headed into a dead end eternity?

The same type of person that would categorically consign an entire church to hell for something that cannot be empirically proved, is the same type of person who would condemn someone for denying global warming. Same mentality - different uniform.

Don’t believe Catholic teachings? Don’t be a Catholic.

Ever hear of the Immaculate Conception? I doubt that you would believe it. But Mary was chosen by God to be sinless so that she could carry the sinless Jesus in her womb. She is the Ark of the New Covenant.

Yeah, heard it's Roman Catholic dogma not "dogmatically" defined until December 8, 1854, by Pope Pius IX in his papal bull Ineffabilis Deus. Hard to believe something based solely on the say so of a Pope nearly two thousand years AFTER the Apostles are all dead, but which is found NOWHERE in the Bible.

In truth, Mary didn't NEED to be sinless in order to bear Jesus in her womb. His sinlessness was based on Him being GOD, not by being born to someone sinless first. In fact, IF Mary was sinless, why didn't SHE die for our sins instead of Jesus? There's a serious question for you. Here's another, if God "chose" Mary to be sinless in order to bear Christ, did she have any choice in the matter? She NEVER sinned, according to this dogma, even way before she was of age to become a mother. Did God not give her a choice in the matter? If she had said, no, would God retroactively make her a sinner like every other human being? Can you see the can of worms such a doctrine opens up when the simple truth was that Mary was "highly favored" by God for her piety and faith, she was of the right lineage from King David and she said yes to God?

RE: Jeremiah 7 & 44

At the time of Jeremiah (and continuing today) there was a cult of the queen of heaven... worshippers of the moon. Even a cursory understanding of the history of Islam will inform you that Mohammed appropriated many of the trappings of this cult in his foundations for Islam. Why? Simply because it was the biggest and strongest among the cults and he needed their support. That is why they make pilgrimage around their moon rock, the Ka'aba.

Mary is honored, because she was an honorable and faithful woman.

Was the Ark of the Covenant honored because it was made of gold? No. It was honored because it was fashioned by God to bear His Presence to the Israelites. Just so, Mary is not just an honorable and faithful woman (although she is). She is a woman elevated by God to bear His Son for the salvation of the world.

Catholics don't elevate Mary, we see her as God has elevated her... to be the Ark of the New Covenant, queen mother of the eternal Davidic King, and the human mother of God Incarnate, Jesus Christ. As the Church is the Body of Christ, so she is also our mother in faith.

The answer is simple. The Dogmas of the Catholic Church. Inspired, guided and preserved from teaching error by the Holy Spirit. The 3rd Person of the Blessed Trinity. To put it another way: to be transported to the 1st Century, to be present at the writings of the first gospels one would be hard pressed to derive the doctrine of the Trinity simply from the text.

Sure, today we can quote scripture, “In the Name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit,” but by what method would one derive the doctine of the Trinity from that? It’s not unreasonable to believe that these things had to be figured out.

One would have to, of course, accept that doctrine is developed as we come to a fuller understanding. Some would suggest that this represents a repudiation of what came before. That it divorces man from the Word of God. I disagree. It is the fulfillment of what was handed down and thus it is proper that by our faith and our reason we approach a fuller comprehension of the tenets of our faith.

This is especially crucial since the scriptures are not self-interpreting. We all stand on the shoulders of the gospel writers, the early church fathers and others who came before us and helped us grow in our understanding of the Faith. Ultimately that is why Christ left us a Church. To teach. With scripture at its core but never separated from Christ’s Church.

It’s up to each of us and our own individual consciences to either accept or reject that. But ultimately it requires an act of faith. To say yes even if we don’t fully understand.

Do you know what the Miracle is according to Catholic teaching..., the divine miracle is that it is does not change substance. It is a miracle that is stays a wafer according to Catholic teaching.

What did Jesus serve at the Last Supper?

Could it be said that a belief in Mary being sinless is a belief in Predestination? She was born sinless and was going to be the mother of Jesus Christ no matter what? No free will whatsoever? Free will is, however, a tenet of the church espousing the sinlessness of Mary. Sounds like internally inconsistent theology to me, surprisingly poorly thought out.

Catholics don't apply this reasoning to Genesis 1-11, however.

Your point?
