What's the deal with Joyce Meyer?

Posted on 03/06/2014 6:06:04 AM PST by Ex-Episcopalian

I would like to know what FReepers think of Joyce Meyer, the prolific speaker, author and teacher. I write book reviews for my church, and I worked on a review of "God Is Not Mad At You". A friend at church told me that Meyer's theology is very controversial, so I asked my pastor about it. He said that he would not want to promote a book by Meyer because of some things she has said, for example, Jesus went to hell to pay for our sins, was forgiven by God, and was the first born-again man. I know that is wrong because the payment for our sins was full and final on the Cross, Jesus did not have to be forgiven for anything, and was certainly not born again. We are born again. Any comments on this or on Meyer in general? Thank you.

My copy of the Apostle’s Creed actually says that Christ descended into Hell.

Yeah, but Christ always WAS God and didn't need God's forgiveness. You see how crazy this sounds?

Can anybody give an actual REFERENCE to Joyce saying this??

Sounds to me like somebody just SAID that Joyce said this... often the case for these witch hunts.

Burn her anyway!!!! - Sarcasm.

I thought that everyone knew that Meyers was nothing but a prosperity kook.

She once preached a sermon on how important it is for a woman to keep her stocking seams straight.

She’s always bragging about how wealthy and important she is, and how hard it is to find just the right personal jet.

But when they persisted in asking Him,
He straightened up, and said to them,
“He who is without sin among you,
let him be the first to throw a stone at her.”

I watched her program daily for several years and I can honestly say I never heard her preaching a “wealth and health” gospel. What I did hear her preaching, as a woman to women, was submission to our husbands, setting an example as Christians wherever we were and in every circumstance, and studying the Word on our own regularly. The only scripture I heard her get wrong was I Corinthians 11, the scripture about a woman’s headcovering. She said all that meant was a husband is the woman’s covering. I know there are many different interpretations of that scripture, and I still struggle with it. It very clearly states a woman’s hair is her covering and long hair is her glory.

But can she take it with her?

I think all that money will be a fire hazard where she’s headed.

These comments, or words to those effects, are found in Meyer’s booklet, “The Most Important Decision You Will Ever Make”, Harrison House, 1991, revised in 1993 and 1998. I have not read the booklet myself; I found several references to it.

I used to listen to Joyce Meyer fairly regularly but just don’t anymore. No particular reason, just on on schedule with her broadcasts I guess.

The Joyce haters here sound just like the Rush haters on the left. -They NEVER listen but put words in his mouth and twist what he really says in order to blast him.

Shame on you.

I’m sorry, but you’re proving my point here.

“so and so told me she said this - let’s burn her!”
“I HEARD that she said that... BURN HER!”

Come on folks.

In what era would she have preached such a sermon? Women haven’t worn “stockings” with seams since the advent of panty hose. That would have been in the mid-sixties before she had a television program. That sound to me like a serious misquote at the very least.

>> “junk theology” <<

.
If its theology, it is junk. There is not one speck of theology in Yehova’s word.

Theology becomes necessary when one strays from the word, and must justify personal beliefs by clipping a sentence here and a verse there to prop up a house of cards.

Saw her in Long Beach a few years ago. I was impressed with how unapologetically conservative she and her husband seemed to be. I was more observer though, as I’m not Christian but Noachide. But it was a pretty good show.

Note: Christian men, this is an excellent venue for meeting Christian oriented women.

If one preaches the word, one will never be a “celebrity;” they’ll be attacking every word you utter that cuts into their comfort zone.

Joyce still wears stockings with seams, and has someone to assure that her appearance is just so.

I’m a Catholic, but I also enjoy listening to JM occaisionally and have attended some of her conferences.

And btw-—I also much prefer the “Gospel of prosperity” any day of the week over the current Pope’s socialist bs and the stuff about “social justice” we constantly hear in church every week.

I laugh when Catholics complain about the lavish lifestyles of some very successful Protestant preachers like JM. Has anyone visited the Vatican lately? There is no church around today that is nearly as wealthy and powerful as the Catholic Church. The Pope, the Cardinals, and most bishops live in a royal splendour that would rival that of any monarch.

Keep on reading! - Paul also preached that women should keep their hair covered “for the sake of the angels.”

Yes, I know it does. Try getting that one past a pastor on Sunday morning.
