As a good Catholic, I don’t understand why he would do this. sex is part of marriage and there is no requirement to give it up. This is weird to me.
Plenty weird to me too; if they wish to take on a tough discipline, they could consider fasting. With the drop of some unwanted weight (and the heightened spirituality that goes along with fasting as well), they might be once again interested in the marriage bed.

From the looks of them in the picture, they could BOTH use some fasting time. And, if they did, they should not be going around announcing it to the world:

"And when you fast, don't make it obvious, as the hypocrites do, for they try to look miserable and disheveled so people will admire them for their fasting. I tell you the truth, that is the only reward they will ever get." (Matthew 6:16)

I kinda think that principle applies to couples who want to "give up sex" for the sake of the Kingdom of God, too.
