Call Him 'The God Father': Husband and Dad Will Become Catholic Priest -- and Take Vow of Celibacy
The New York Daily News ^ | 1/24/13 | Corky Siemaszko

John Cornelius, who is married, will be ordained this weekend -- and sex-free life begins

John Cornelius will be ordained a Roman Catholic priest this weekend — and with the blessing of his wife they're giving up their sex life. Cornelius, a father of three, will become the first married Roman Catholic priest in New York — and Sharyl, his wife of 33-years, has agreed to the whole celibacy thing.

“We have decided to do that voluntarily,” Cornelius told WGRZ-TV. “I have always had friends that are Roman Catholic priests and I appreciate what they've given up to serve God and the priesthood.”

Cornelius, 64, is a former Episcopalian priest who converted three years ago to Catholicism. He said his old church had gotten too liberal for him.

A most excellent post. Rome has gone down a path that is very difficult to back away from. They just keep digging themselves a deeper hole.

And if the Reformation had not happened, with its historically transformative gospel - and despite its need for further ongoing reformation - the world would be a more darker superstitious and lost place indeed.

yeah, right....the "reformation" probably resulted in the loss of more souls that any other man caused heresies in the history of the world

there were VERY FEW books or documents to be had by the general public...there was really no need to learn to read because there was nothing to read.

Sources? Anything to back up your claims?

As education advanced in the years following Christs establishment of the Catholic church, monastaries were founded throughout the world, and through them, education and thus literacy spread widely. The Catholic church is largely responsible for the spread of knowledge and literacy from the time of Christ to the present.

What a bunch of baloney.

Sorry the links don’t work, but you could look them up on Wikipedia. There was a language called Greek that was widespread at the time. It was only one of many languages that were written down at the time.

there were probably many first century authors....there were few if any first century books available to the public.....Greek may have been a popular language at the time, but virtually no one had hand copied a book in greek available to the people....it just didn't happen at that time......people couldn't read, and if they could, there was virtually nothing to read

think before you leap......this was a society two thousand years ago.....do you seriously think that the Bereans checked existing scripture.....and if so, ....how did they possibly do thsat.....sheesh

Acts 17:10-11 10 The brothers immediately sent Paul and Silas away by night to Berea, and when they arrived they went into the Jewish synagogue. 11 Now these Jews were more noble than those in Thessalonica; they received the word with all eagerness, examining the Scriptures daily to see if these things were so.

Scripture is true. Or are you going to tell us it's wrong?

If I have a choice to believe either you or the Bible, guess who I'm going to believe?

Well here we are again: you demanding your view is correct, because you said it.

Sorry Charlie! Post some proof, or all we have is lots of noise. Frankly, as has been true in this whole thread, I think you have no evidence, facts or logical argument to support any of the truth claims you are making. If you do, you’ve yet to share any.

nope, scripture is not wrong....I thought that we were discussing the "man on the street"...I merely suggested that the average person did not have accessibility to the written word, and that the average "man on the street" didn't go out looking for anything. I do agree that people in religious environments and perhaps what there was of academia could more readily access what information was available. That isn't what we were discussing.

you do realize, I assume, is that is exactly where scripture came from..... if you feard the word of God, at that time, you did not record the words on your cell phone, you didn't even write it down (you couldn't write), but you remembered what had been said and PASSED IT ALONG, by word, to others in your family or circle of friends......that is tradition which became scripture....just think about it for a moment

That is wrong again, of course.

Word of mouth tradition did not BECOME Scripture.

God instructed Moses to write down what He told him, as He did with other writers of the OT.

Working on the assumption of widespread illiteracy is foolish. Those people had plenty of motivation to learn to read, so they could read the Law.

Additionally, the word of mouth tradition you claim became Scripture could be compared to what was written down and kept by the Jewish scribes.

There is plenty of evidence in Scripture itself that literacy was widespread. Just because the general populace probably didn't have enough money to own books, doesn't mean they didn't bother to learn to read and write.

Deuteronomy 6:1-9 “Now this is the commandment—the statutes and the rules—that the Lord your God commanded me to teach you, that you may do them in the land to which you are going over, to possess it, 2 that you may fear the Lord your God, you and your son and your son's son, by keeping all his statutes and his commandments, which I command you, all the days of your life, and that your days may be long. 3 Hear therefore, O Israel, and be careful to do them, that it may go well with you, and that you may multiply greatly, as the Lord, the God of your fathers, has promised you, in a land flowing with milk and honey.

4 “Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one. 5 You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might. 6 And these words that I command you today shall be on your heart. 7 You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise. 8 You shall bind them as a sign on your hand, and they shall be as frontlets between your eyes. 9 You shall write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates.

Deuteronomy 17:14-20 14 “When you come to the land that the Lord your God is giving you, and you possess it and dwell in it and then say, ‘I will set a king over me, like all the nations that are around me,’ 15 you may indeed set a king over you whom the Lord your God will choose. One from among your brothers you shall set as king over you. You may not put a foreigner over you, who is not your brother. 16 Only he must not acquire many horses for himself or cause the people to return to Egypt in order to acquire many horses, since the Lord has said to you, ‘You shall never return that way again.’ 17 And he shall not acquire many wives for himself, lest his heart turn away, nor shall he acquire for himself excessive silver and gold.

18 “And when he sits on the throne of his kingdom, he shall write for himself in a book a copy of this law, approved by the Levitical priests. 19 And it shall be with him, and he shall read in it all the days of his life, that he may learn to fear the Lord his God by keeping all the words of this law and these statutes, and doing them, 20 that his heart may not be lifted up above his brothers, and that he may not turn aside from the commandment, either to the right hand or to the left, so that he may continue long in his kingdom, he and his children, in Israel.

Here is a keyword search for *write*

write

David was a shepherd boy when he was anointed king of Israel, and HE had an education. He wrote most of the psalms.

they were treasured, hand written works of art...you couldn't get them on amazon, and if they existed at all, it was within a very limited source....the average "man on the street" had no access to them at all......and by the way, he didn't know of them nor did he care.

What a joke, especially in light of the fact that I have yet to meet a Catholic who is sure of his or her salvation.

Catholicism cannot even guarantee its own adherents that they'll make it, and Catholic claim that Protestantism results in the loss of souls? They're no more lost than they would be under Catholicism.

I can only assume you make this stuff up, since you can’t prove or support any of it. Even worse, you don’t even try.

I’m especially eager to see proof of your mind-reading of the “average man on the street”! Bring it on!

That is an absurd and bigoted statement that is akin to those who exhibit a cult like mind set. While in the past Rome often promoted obedience by the use of the sword of men, having lost that unScriptural means now and having to play on a more even field then where Rome predominates it overall promotes substantially more liberal views and less conservative souls than her evangelical counterparts which they attack (because the like institutionalized Anglican types are not a threat).

Those RCs who are conservative are a minority who typically manifest they will not deal objectively with what challenges them, often refusing to really look at such, but blindly engage in absurdity trying to defend the object of their devotion, and often resort to personal attacks on those who expose Rome, while trying to disown those majority of RC which Rome treats as members in life and in death. But if a soul like Ted Kennedy converted to become a conservative Baptist then the real concern would be shown.

As a result, for Scriptural seekers their attempted defense is actually an argument against the entity they seek defend.

That’s not an answer to my question.

The general protocol on FR is that if someone makes a claim to something, they need to back it up.

You’re making claims to literacy rates.

Back them up or no one is obligated to accept it or give it any credibility as it as merely say so.
