Do Catholics worship Mary? This question is as old as the Protestant Reformation itself, and it rests, like other disputed doctrinal points, on a false premise that has been turned into a wedge: the veneration of Mary detracts from the worship of Christ.
This seeming opposition between Mary and Christ is symptomatic of the Protestant tendency, begun by Luther, to view the entirety of Christian life through a dialectical lens – a lens of conflict and division. With the Reformation the integrity of Christianity is broken and its formerly coherent elements are now set in opposition. The Gospel versus the Law. Faith versus Works. Scripture versus Tradition. Authority versus Individuality. Faith versus Reason. Christ versus Mary.
The Catholic tradition rightly sees the mutual complementarity of these elements of the faith, as they all contribute to our ultimate end – living with God now and in eternity. To choose any one of these is to choose them all.
By contrast, to assert that Catholics worship Mary along with or in place of Christ, or that praying to Mary somehow impedes Christ’s role as “the one mediator between God and men” (1 Tim 2:5) is to create a false dichotomy between the Word made flesh and the woman who gave the Word his flesh. No such opposition exists. The one Mediator entrusted his mediation to the will and womb of Mary. She does not impede his mediation – she helps to make it possible.
Within this context we see the ancillary role that the ancilla Domini plays in her divine Son’s mission. Mary’s is not a surrogate womb rented and then forgotten in God’s plan. She is physically connected to Christ and his life, and because of this she is even more deeply connected to him in the order of grace. She is, in fact, “full of grace,” as only one who is redeemed by Christ could be.
The feast of Mary’s Immaculate Conception celebrates the very first act of salvation by Christ in the world. Redemption is made possible for all by his precious blood shed on the cross. Yet Mary’s role in the Savior’s life and mission is so critical and so unique that God saw it necessary to wash her in the blood of the Lamb in advance, at the first moment of her conception.
This reality could not be more Biblical: the angel greets Mary as “full of grace” (Luke 1:28), which is literally rendered as “already graced” (kecharitōmenē). Following Mary, the Church has “pondered what sort of greeting this might be” for centuries. The dogma of the Immaculate Conception, ultimately defined in 1854, is nothing other than a rational expression of the angel’s greeting contained in Scripture: Mary is “already graced” with Christ’s redemption at the very moment of her creation.
Because God called Mary to the unique vocation of serving as the Mother of God, it is not just her soul that is graced, as is the case for us when we receive the sacraments. Mary’s entire being, body and soul, is full of grace so that she may be a worthy ark for the New Covenant. And just as the ark of the old covenant was adorned with gold to be a worthy house for God’s word, Mary is conceived without original sin to be the living and holy house for God’s Word.
Thus Mary is not only conceived immaculately, that is, without stain of sin. She also is the Immaculate Conception. Her entire being was specifically created by God with unique privilege so that she could fulfill her role in God’s plan of salvation. “Free from sin,” both original and personal, is the necessary consequence of being “full of grace.”
Protestants claim that veneration of Mary as it is practiced by Catholics is not biblical. St. Paul encouraged the Corinthians to “be imitators of me, as I am of Christ” (1 Cor 11:1). Paul is not holding himself up as the end goal, but as a means to Christ, the true end. And if a person is imitated, he is simultaneously venerated.
If we should imitate Paul, how much more should we imitate Mary, who fulfilled God’s will to the greatest degree a human being could. Throughout her life she humbled herself so that God could be exalted, and because of this, Christ has fulfilled his promise by exalting his lowly mother to the seat closest to him in God’s kingdom.
Mary is the model of humility, charity, and openness to the will of God. She allows a sword to pierce her heart for the sake of the world’s salvation. She shows us the greatness to which we are called: a life free from sin and filled with God’s grace that leads to union with God in Heaven. She is the model disciple, and therefore worthy of imitation and veneration, not as an end in herself, but as the means to the very purpose of her – and our – existence: Christ himself.
God’s lowly handmaiden would not want it any other way.
OK. I was raised Catholic. I know the Catholic church's claims about itself, to be the one true church.
I am not *invincibly ignorant* by Catholic church standards so I know what position that puts me in IN THE EYES OF THE CATHOLIC CHURCH.
I disagree with that based on my reading and understanding of the clear and plain meaning of Scripture. Salvation is through a PERSON, not an organization. It is by grace, through faith, not of works so that NO ONE can BOAST.
I do not agree that salvation is through a church, ANY church. I do not agree that my salvation is to be finished by works (Galatians 3) of any kind.
If it were, it wouldn't be through mercy and grace, it would be wages due for performance given. God would owe me salvation for what I did.
Nobody can stand before God and say that He owes them because they did fill in the blank, even when it is combined with acknowledging His existence.
Remember, Jesus said the tax collector who recognized who and what he was before a holy God and asked God for His mercy went away JUSTIFIED, rather than the Pharisee who appealed to his good works.
God doesn't need our works. He wants our hearts.
Please tell me you are pulling my chain. Did you not see infallible statement from the chair of Peter>/b>?
Pope Eugene IV, Council of Florence, Cantate Domino, 1441, ex cathedra ( infallible statement from the chair of Peter): The Holy Roman Church firmly believes, professes and preaches that all those who are outside the Catholic Church, not only pagans but also Jews or heretics and schismatics, cannot share in eternal life and will go into the everlasting fire which was prepared for the devil and his angels, unless they are joined to the Church before the end of their lives; that the unity of this ecclesiastical body is of such importance that only for those who abide in it do the Churchs sacraments contribute to salvation and do fasts, almsgiving and other works of piety and practices of the Christian militia produce eternal rewards; and that nobody can be saved, no matter how much he has given away in alms and even if he has shed blood in the name of Christ, unless he has persevered in the bosom and unity of the Catholic Church.
Now you want to be clear?? Seriously??
>>The church does not claim to know who will be saved or not,<<
Well according to the Pope Eugene IV, Council of Florence speaking ex cathedra they sure are saying who definitely cannot be saved.
>>because that would be pretending to be an all knowing God.<<
You said it! Or maybe replacing or standing in place of God. Vicar of Christ? What do you think we have been telling people around here?
>>That is what cults do<<
Thats what Ive been thinking also. Oh and dont forget. Once its made ex cathedra or an infallible statement from the chair of Peter it cant be changed without proclaiming that the Pope insnt infallible after all even when speaking ex cathedra so for all time Catholics must admit that no one outside the Catholic Church can be saved per the Catholic Church.
So, let me be clear. That self proclaimed infallible statement from the chair of Peter is part of what ALL catholics must believe or be considered anathema.
No wonder you have such a problem with our Pope being the final authority. It seems you think you know Catholisism better than Catholics, and the Pope, and only you are infallable. Whatever makes you happy....May God repay you in kind, and judge you according to your judgement of others.
I come on to talk about issues that have an eternal consequence - it is serious stuff and I can't pretend it's not.
Me too, very serious stuff.
I pray that those who are putting anything between them and Jesus will see the light of the possibility of a personal relationship with Him, which brings immense Joy.
What is that song?
The Joy of the Lord is my strength
Or is it
The strength of the Lord is my Joy.
Either way it is the truth!
Happy New Year to you!
Ive never understood that attitude and perspective. So people who have never heard of Christ are saved if they are good people and try to seek God (whatever that may be) with a sincere heart are saved. Then the church sends out missionaries to preach the gospel of Christ and those people reject it. (obviously because they feel they already know God and its not the one the missionaries are preaching) They then go to hell when prior to them preaching the Gospel to them they were saved? Why would Christ say go into all the world?
Wow!!!!! No wonder Catholics get stuck on legalisms. Havent they heard about believe on the Lord Jesus and you will be saved and your house? I dont remember reading about Paul spending the next month on legalize.
But, but, but its not a cult. I swear its not a cult. The priest said its not a cult and even the Pope said its not a cult. No where in the CCC does it say the RCC is a cult so it cant be a cult. Now the RCC and many others within the Catholic Church do talk about the cult of Mary but that doesnt mean what it sounds like it means cuz .well I dont know but it doesnt.
That is not what the Catechism is saying at all. It says what it says.
There is also this, which CANNOT be ignored by any professing Catholic.
Pope Eugene IV, Council of Florence, Cantate Domino, 1441,ex cathedra ( infallible statement from the chair of Peter): The Holy Roman Church firmly believes, professes and preaches that all those who are outside the Catholic Church, not only pagans but also Jews or heretics and schismatics, cannot share in eternal life and will go into the everlasting fire which was prepared for the devil and his angels, unless they are joined to the Church before the end of their lives; that the unity of this ecclesiastical body is of such importance that only for those who abide in it do the Churchs sacraments contribute to salvation and do fasts, almsgiving and other works of piety and practices of the Christian militia produce eternal rewards; and that nobody can be saved, no matter how much he has given away in alms and even if he has shed blood in the name of Christ, unless he has persevered in the bosom and unity of the Catholic Church.
Additionally, I have been told by Catholics on this board that once a Catholic, always a Catholic. That baptism into the Catholic church leaves an indelible mark on one's soul.
The pope is final authority only for those who want to out themselves under him. He is NOT the final authority for anyone outside the Catholic church.
Scripture is the TRUTH and does not change. *It is written...* is the only authority anyone needs to know.
Only God knows people's hearts, that is why only He can determine at anytime who is saved or not, even at the time of death. Circumstances and cultures effect people. If a person was brought up with no respect for others, but didn't judge others harshly, God's judgement would likely be more merciful on that person, than the person who recieved many Grace's from God and didn't respect it, and was harsh and arrogant towards others.
Just an example, but only God knows a person's heart, circumstances, and actions in life.
God was very clear about people being judgemental, and how He will return that judgement. I personally try not to ridicule other religions or people. I also cringe for a person's sould, when I read these judgemental accusations against another person's faith in God, being in God's name. That's just me, because I do know better.

That is interesting. What did YHvH tell you about salvation, Catholics, and everything else?
Oh really? So all those saints Catholic pray to who the RCC declared were saved and thus went to heaven was what exactly?

likely? likely? Did you get that from scripture or ex cathedra or what?
>> God was very clear about people being judgemental,<<
Yes He was.
John 7:24 Do not judge by appearances, but judge with right judgment.
We are to judge with right judgement. How else could we possibly follow all the other scriptures that tell us not to be not unequally yoked or to rebuke before all or be one who converteth the sinner from the error of his way if we dont judge which is right and which is wrong?
James 5:20 Let him know, that he which converteth the sinner from the error of his way shall save a soul from death, and shall hide a multitude of sins.
1 Timothy 5:20 Them that sin rebuke before all, that others also may fear.
It's best to understand ALL of scripture rather than pic a choose verses to hide behind.
All the Apostles are saints. Do you believe they went to hell? another person you may be familiar with is Mother Theresa, do you think she went to hell.
There are amazing Catholics that gave up everything, and gladly suffered, to serve God, who to us undoubtedly are in heaven, and continue to battle the Father of Deception for our souls.
People like Mother Theresa show me proof of God's love, not some anonymous bloggers. But I respect your point of view, and enjoy the entertainment. Thank you.

From the CCC.....
751 The word "Church" (Latin ecclesia, from the Greek ek-ka-lein, to "call out of") means a convocation or an assembly. It designates the assemblies of the people, usually for a religious purpose.139 Ekklesia is used frequently in the Greek Old Testament for the assembly of the Chosen People before God, above all for their assembly on Mount Sinai where Israel received the Law and was established by God as his holy people.140 By calling itself "Church," the first community of Christian believers recognized itself as heir to that assembly. In the Church, God is "calling together" his people from all the ends of the earth. the equivalent Greek term Kyriake, from which the English word Church and the German Kirche are derived, means "what belongs to the Lord."

Or how can you say to your brother, Let me take the speck out of your eye, when there is the log in your own eye? You hypocrite, first take the log out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to take the speck out of your brother's eye.

He was despised and rejected by men; a man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief; and as one from whom men hide their faces he was despised, and we esteemed him not. Surely he has borne our griefs and carried our sorrows; yet we esteemed him stricken, smitten by God, and afflicted. But he was wounded for our transgressions; he was crushed for our iniquities; upon him was the chastisement that brought us peace, and with his stripes we are healed. ... 2 Timothy 3:5-6 ESV / 26 helpful votes Having the appearance of godliness, but denying its power. Anyone who does not love does not know God, because God is love. In this the love of God was made manifest among us, that God sent his only Son into the world, so that we might live through him. The ox knows its owner, and the donkey its master's crib, but Israel does not know, my people do not understand. Ah, sinful nation, a people laden with iniquity, offspring of evildoers, children who deal corruptly! They have forsaken the Lord, they have despised the Holy One of Israel, they are utterly estranged. Why will you still be struck down? Why will you continue to rebel? Proverbs 19:1-29 ESV / 12 helpful votes Better is a poor person who walks in his integrity than one who is crooked in speech and is a fool. Desire without knowledge is not good, and whoever makes haste with his feet misses his way. When a man's folly brings his way to ruin, his heart rages against the Lord. Wealth brings many new friends, but a poor man is deserted by his friend. A false witness will not go unpunished, and he who breathes out lies will not escape. ... That is making a judgment about them.
Judgment is judgment. Or does it matter of someone makes a *good* judgment about someone as opposed to a *bad* judgment about them.
Or perhaps it's a matter if one LIKES the judgment others are making or not. For example, someone would not object to others judging them if they judged that they were going to heaven, but might object if the judgment was that they weren't going to heaven.
Perhaps people don't object when the judgment is favorable to them. You think?
