One of MTVs most popular shows is coming to an end. According to reports, The Jersey Shore will cease production at the conclusion of this years season. The Shore, as it is commonly referred to, follows the lives of alcoholic, spiritually-adrift twentysomethings as they party it up during their summer vacation on New Jerseys east coast.
Now that The Shore is coming to an end, television executives are trying to put together the next big ratings-getter. And Ryan Murphy (creator of Glee) thinks hes got just the answer.
Murphys show, The New Normal which premiered September 10th on NBC focuses on two men, Bryan and David, who are engaged in a committed, gay partnership. While the couple is out shopping, David sees an oh-so-precious toddler in a stroller and later tells Bryan that It was the cutest thing Ive ever seen. I must have it! He agrees and the premise of the show is set: two gay guys want to start a family, but they cant have a child the traditional way, so they turn to surrogacy.
Its fans praise it for its in-your-face attitude, but The New Normal comes off as a cheesy infomercial filled with stereotypes meant to convince on-the-fence Americans that gay marriage really isnt all that bad, and that those on the political right are just a bunch of racists.
To expose cultural conservatives for what they truly are, the show’s producers created a character named Nana, the Midwestern grandmother of the woman Bryan and David pay $35,000 to be their surrogate. Nana is everything Hollywood liberals think conservatives are: bigoted, mean-spirited, and xenophobic. In one scene, Nana played by raging leftist Ellen Barken says she loves gay people because she could never get her hair to look good without them. In another, she informs her granddaughter that she feels like she just ate a black and gay stew” right before she fell asleep because it feels like she is living in a nightmare.
Right. And opponents of gay marriage want all gay people deported.
Hollywoods incessant mocking of social conservatives is meant to pressure them into supporting liberal causes. But if the shows ratings are any indication, most Americans reject the upside down reality that The New Normal presents.
The reality is that two men cannot start a family in any sense of the word. They have to go behind natures back if they want to. But even then, as we are seeing in California right now, situations involving surrogate parents and same-sex couples are increasingly legally complex, and may ultimately lead to three-parent situations.
Moreover, even though Bryan and David may seem like an open-minded, caring couple, when they are told they can create the perfect embryo for their child, Bryan odiously demands a skinny blonde child who doesnt cry. Eugenics anyone?
Inasmuch as The New Normal may be the norm for left-wing, one-percenters living in Manhattan or in that foreign country we refer to as the state of California, it isnt normal for the overwhelming majority of Americans, and it wont be anytime soon.
Americans realize that Hollywoods deep hatred for traditional values is no laughing matter. I predict that they, like the NBC affiliate in Utah that chose not to air the show, will reject what media elites see as morally permissible. Expect The New Normal to last no more than one season.
Maybe not laugh, exactly. It's more like that vague pre-laugh feeling you get sometimes when you realize someone's telling a joke and you inadvertently shift the muscles in your face and chest in laugh-preparation. Then you realize it was a false alarm and go back to sitting there bored.
Other than that, it was pretty lame.
To be followed by another and another and another...
I decided some time ago that the expression, “the new normal,” signifies nothing more than the old SINFUL.
“It is because of the hasty and superficial conversation with God that the sense of sin is so weak and that no motives have power to help you to hate and flee from sin as you should.” ....GK Chesterton
That garbage is still on the air? I haven’t seen one second of it, but from what I hear the ratings for it are in the toilet
To be canceled one after the other and the other.
GLEE is a hateful gay show too
wish it’d get canceled
Until they get the right mix.
Playing the liberals’ view of an intolerant conservative is what had Ellen “Barkin at the moon” sending all those “tweeds” (twitter screeds) about how much she hates conservatives before the show first aired to make sure no one thought she was really conservative.
They mix won’t matter when people tell the sponsors of the networks that they will boycott their products if they continue to sponsor this filth. The power of the $$ is supreme here.
“It will be canceled within 1 month.”
You’re probably right, Darth Vader, but don’t be surprised if they prop this show up a long time because of a desire to normalize and propagandize the lifestyle.
No where near as funny as Modern Family, which like it or not... most of us have a gay couple in family.
NBC tried to ahem stuff this down viewer’s throats during the Olympics. It seemed every commercial break they ran an ad for this creepy show. I can only hope it sinks to bottom of the Sea of Crud that constitutes network primetime tv.
That’s why we hit the sponsors hard.
“The ratings were unfortunately high. #18 and #20 on Nielsen”
Let’s see the ratings when the give it a try or two people have left and all the other new shows kick in.
No TV in my house. My kids are happy with the videos we allow them. I myself am a confirmed TV snob. I have not seen anything (other than the first few episodes of Scrubs) in the last 35 years. Have continued to get quite an amount of reading done. News via web. What else does one need?
OK, truth be told, one or two episodes of Seinfeld, the occasional football game, golf tournament, Triple Crown races, the odd World Series, and about five episodes of The Voice last year.
“No TV in my house.”
I threw my TV away during the OJ trial. How many Freepers have likewise thrown it out or stopped watching?
I choose to fight not against the breakdown of the family nor sexual norms but the language. It should be the new normalcy or the new normality. “Normal” is an adjective.
