But history shows the news of the day was that the tomb was empty.

I disagree. It was Mary Magdalene, Joanna, Mary the mother of James, and several other women who went to the tomb and found it open. They went inside and thought Jesus was missing. Then two angels inside the tomb reminded Mary that he 'had arisen'.

Later, Mary takes the apostles (well, 11 of them anyway) to the tomb, and not only is the place not empty, but two angels and Jesus are in there. Pretty busy 'tomb' there.

Jesus was seen running around for 40 days at least. He even showed up to convince a 'doubting thomas'.

Who placed the body of Jesus in the tomb?

Let’s not get confused about a simple chronology.

First Jesus died on the cross, then he was buried in the tomb of Joseph of Arimathea, then he rose on the third day. Then, Mary visited the empty tomb. To say the tomb was empty means there was no body inside the tomb.

Later, Mary saw Jesus outside the tomb, thinking at first he was the gardener. Then he spoke to her and she realized he was Jesus.
