Anti-Mormon bias facing Mitt Romney is as strong as what his father faced in 1967, poll shows
Boston Globe ^ | June 21, 2012 | Callum Borchers

Mitt Romney faces an anti-Mormon bias just as strong as the one his father confronted during his own presidential run more than four decades ago, according to a Gallup poll.

Eighteen percent of Americans say that if their political party nominated “a generally well qualified person for president who happened to be Mormon,” they would not vote for that candidate. Romney, the presumptive Republican nominee, is a devout Mormon who once presided over the church’s Boston stake.

When Gallup asked the same question in 1967, during George Romney’s bid for the White House, 17 percent of Americans said they would refuse to vote for a Mormon.

“The stability of resistance to a Mormon presidential candidate over the past 45 years is an anomaly, given that resistance to a candidate who is black, a woman or Jewish has declined substantially over the same period of time,” Gallup Poll Editor-in-Chief Frank Newport wrote in a press release announcing the survey results.

The electoral significance of a lingering anti-Mormon bias is unclear because only 57 percent of Americans even know that Romney is a Mormon, according to the poll.

“This suggests the possibility that as Romney’s faith becomes better known this summer and fall, it could become more of a negative factor -- given that those who resist the idea of a Mormon president will in theory become more likely to realize that Romney is a Mormon as the campaign unfolds,” Newport said. “That things will actually work out this way, however, is far from clear.”

Democrats, who are unlikely to vote for Romney anyway, oppose a Mormon president at a much higher rate than Republicans, 24 percent to 10 percent. Opposition among independents stands at 18 percent.

good then stop shouting at all the rest of us who want an end to Obambi. You want to get someone other than Romney you will ahve a chance in 4 more years. He is not my first choice, but I’d rather have his attorney general than Holder, I rather have his EPA director than the one that is there now. I like to see some new faces at BLM, the Interior and treasury.

I don’t know who, or what either of those are.

Bishop Romney has personally excommunicated impure Mormons, and he is a Temple Mormon, a degree of purity that is reviewed every two years, a degree of purity that he passes with flying colors, a test of purity that he was in charge of overseeing and administering religious purity testing for, from 1982-1994.

What do you think his politics were from 1982 to 1994, when he was excommunicating Mormons and awarding Temple status to the most holy ones?

Would you like to see his videos, letters, campaign literature on abortion and the homosexual agenda while he was a Stake President overseeing the Mormon Bishops of his region akin to a Roman Catholic diocese, and campaigning in 1993 and 1994, and fund raising for Planned Parenthood and in 1995 helping to create what became known as the ‘Mitt’s Temple’ in Boston, (again forbidden to the 85% of less pure Mormons, and especially your “Jack Mormons”)?

I've been told that many men have been excommunicated so that the excommunicator can take the excommunicated's wives.

If you're talking about the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, I think you've been told wrong - certainly, at least, in this century.

If you're talking about one of the offshoot churches that still practices D&C 132 polygamy, then you're likely right.

But not the LDS.

It seems like you just conceded that your post that I was responding to was nonsense then, Bishop Romney is a leader in a cult that wants to destroy Christianity, he loves abortion and has passionately proselytized it’s benefits to America on TV, and public appearences, many here such as JR call him socialist and point out his single record in elective office as socialist and creating Romney/Obama care.

If you want to promote him, (this is the religion forum) then tell us more than what you tried in that post.

Wow.

And where are the following sects on this issue:

1. Methodists
2. Free Methodists
3. Southern Baptists
4. Lutheran Churches of the Missouri Synod
5. Conservative Presyberterians
6. Catholics
7. Other mainline Protestant Churches

What I feel is really telling in your list of "Churches" telling the Pentecostals their a cult, is the Cult of them all, the Mormon Church.

If you're not getting my drift, your list is suspect.

You’ve become repetitive and boring. You remind me of Willie Green and his trains.

And you remind actual conservatives of the supporters of McCain and Rudy.

So-Called conservatives who were actualy POP (Party over Principle) types whose conservative principles are more like suggestions and whose conservative principles are up for sale to whomever the RINO, or Progressive Liberal in Mitt's case, has been propped up by the GOP-E.

Romney loves abortion? Do you read the foolishness you write before you hit post? Now you might be able to make a case for the bastard commie in the white hut loving abortion as his wedge issue to herd feminists, blacks, and sexual degenerates ...

Of course I do, if you knew anything about Mitt Romney you would recognize the accuracy of my description of Mitt.

Mitt Romney has given the most loving, heart felt defense of abortion of any republican that we have ever seen, many times.

Here is one of those times when he is speaking on television to the women and daughters of Massachusetts explaining in language that a teen girl can understand and relate to, the importance of abortion being legal, and why he cares so deeply that it be kept legal, why decent people who love and care, must keep it legal.

For Romney, Keeping Abortion Legal is about Love and Family, and Protecting our Daughters from Back Alley Abortions

Who is shouting? I don't want Obama either... But I also know that Romney doesn't stand a chance without the Christian Right... And he will not be able to win them over. It is predictable.

You want to get someone other than Romney you will ahve a chance in 4 more years.

yes I will... And I have that same chance this year too.

He is not my first choice, but I’d rather have his attorney general than Holder, I rather have his EPA director than the one that is there now. I like to see some new faces at BLM, the Interior and treasury.

Fear does strange things to the human mind... Apollo being somehow better than Baal is a distinction without a difference.

And now you tip over the edge and accuse me of adoring Milt Rominy. The other day another Inman tried to intimate that I compartmentalized my Christianity and thus wasn't 'really' behaving like a Christian should. On this very thread another INman has tried to hint that I may not 'understand' the scriptures that warn not to vote for a man like Milt Rominy. The perspective is not a pretty sight, Ansel.

I do however appreciate you illustrating the reality of this obsessive assault that twists one's reasoning into a pretzel. Please, try to find a place of rest, absorb the Peace that passeth all understanding, and apply what you already know of God's Grace toward each of us. When you obsess over someone like Milt, you miss the real dangers pushing the agenda for America and the world. Satan does his most evil genius work when he can distract us into obsession and hatred. Axelrod works for a very evil being, but likely doesn't even realize it himself.

So causes like a superior chance of getting pro-life judges on the supreme court if perhaps only done for political reasons (like a second term or campaign contributions)...

Basic upon what track record is Romney judge appointments deemed as a "superior chance?"

Only 9 of his 36 judicial apptmts in MA were Republican. Of those 9, how many of them were even "pro-life?"

Who can answer that question? And if you can't, you are generically arguing from silence (the track record doesn't reinforce your claims) & it sounds to me like you've just picked up a four-leaf clover and are holding it in your hands as you wish upon a lucky star that Romney may/might pick a pro-life justice or two.

I am assuming those are some of the reasons that pastor Jeffress would hold his nose for Romney. Why else do you think he would hold his nose?

Same reason other so-called conservatives are willing to vote for a liberal:
#1...they don't like Obama (which says absolutely NOTHING about who they are voting for;
#2...People want a "place at the table" -- they want a mythical self-projection that they themselves "made a difference" -- albeit how small...
...they don't want to see themselves as on the outside - leaving no difference whatsoever...

So voters in the overwhelming # of states ignore the reality of the electoral system & think they are voting @ the POTUS level to "make a difference." The fact is -- the overwhelming # of voters aren't -- at least @ that race level.

Look you are attacking me in a nasty personal way for something.

Since you first jumped on me to defend Mitt Romney’s abortion record, I assumed that you supported him,

If you just wanted to attack me personally you didn’t need to use Romney as a pretense if you aren’t a Romney supporter, and if you aren’t on this thread to promote and defend him.

I always wonder about the people who were banned in the past for saying something like that. It’s ok to say it now, but what about the people before the policy change?

No one was ever banned for such a thing, no policy change of that nature ever happened.
