Anti-Mormon bias facing Mitt Romney is as strong as what his father faced in 1967, poll shows
Boston Globe ^ | June 21, 2012 | Callum Borchers

Mitt Romney faces an anti-Mormon bias just as strong as the one his father confronted during his own presidential run more than four decades ago, according to a Gallup poll.

Eighteen percent of Americans say that if their political party nominated “a generally well qualified person for president who happened to be Mormon,” they would not vote for that candidate. Romney, the presumptive Republican nominee, is a devout Mormon who once presided over the church’s Boston stake.

When Gallup asked the same question in 1967, during George Romney’s bid for the White House, 17 percent of Americans said they would refuse to vote for a Mormon.

“The stability of resistance to a Mormon presidential candidate over the past 45 years is an anomaly, given that resistance to a candidate who is black, a woman or Jewish has declined substantially over the same period of time,” Gallup Poll Editor-in-Chief Frank Newport wrote in a press release announcing the survey results.

The electoral significance of a lingering anti-Mormon bias is unclear because only 57 percent of Americans even know that Romney is a Mormon, according to the poll.

“This suggests the possibility that as Romney’s faith becomes better known this summer and fall, it could become more of a negative factor -- given that those who resist the idea of a Mormon president will in theory become more likely to realize that Romney is a Mormon as the campaign unfolds,” Newport said. “That things will actually work out this way, however, is far from clear.”

Democrats, who are unlikely to vote for Romney anyway, oppose a Mormon president at a much higher rate than Republicans, 24 percent to 10 percent. Opposition among independents stands at 18 percent.

When was Romney’s conversion?

That's the deal, right there... A 'Road to Damascus' conversion is a very common thing during election cycles. How anyone takes any polititian at his word while he is on the election stump escapes me entirely.

To accept Romney at his word would require both proof and time... Otherwise, his record must suffice.

As bad as Mormonism is for the candidate, if he were a 'good Mormon', it might be somewhat palatable... might be overlooked considering the present administration... But add 'mormon' to pro-choice and pro-homo, and this guy is simply a non-starter for any Christian I know.

High ranking Bishop and Stake President, Mitt Romney, is without doubt one of the most faithful and devout of Mormons, as is Harry Reid.

“We’re not electing a Pope!”

RINOmney would not qualify for pope.

... maybe Mormonic High Priest.

He is a High Bishop - are we electing one of those?

We don't elect 'rulers' or 'teachers', we elect a Commander in Chief of the United States Armed Forces.

With respect: The election of a CoC is ancillary to this conversation - While it is an important principle to the DEFCONS, and should be important to any true Conservative, and any American, one cannot expect to lever SOCONS out of defending their principles using a subject matter that is not among their immovable concerns.

What is at stake here (wrt the OP) is the Judeo-Christian Ethic, and with Christianity, Pro-Life, and Pro-Marriage/Family issues taking the foreground.

Those who wish to be ruled by a competent Turk should move to Turkey.

P.S. I will be joining Martin Luthur in not voting for the liberal anti-Christian Romney!

Let me reiterate: Whether his Mormanism, or in spite of it, his position on Life and Marriage transmits the condition of his character sufficiently... Enough to make him a non-starter regardless of any other thing.

I know, and I agree with you, and I should have taken more time in my post to make that clear.

I do always make a point though to point out that Mitt Romney is among the most pure and devout of all of the Mormon elite and that he is a part of the religions moral leadership.

I live in TX as you can see in my profile and the Southern Baptist convention jsut elected a black man their president. There are so many mega churchs within driving distance that only a few lost sould can't find a place of worship within walkin distance.

As for 99% of the rest of your thoughts - what would your rather have an abortion loving socialist that is trying to ruin all Christian churches or a Mormon?

By recognizing and accepting his conversion on the subject.

What "conversion"? One day while preparing his campaign for the presidential nomination he suddenly switched to pro-life, with no real explanation.

Romney is the most passionate, dedicated, pro-abortion national republican we have ever known, he even puts his pro-abortion commitment date as 1963, yet we have no conversion, no journey, no self searching, no doubts, merely a bloodless, unemotional, policy switch for a different level of campaigning.

Mormon would be hard enough to swallow, to be honest, as would Catholic in most cases... But since this Mormon is an abortion-loving socialist too, the point is rendered moot.

I will certainly choose 'neither'.

Bishop Romney is a leader in a cult that wants to destroy Christianity, he loves abortion and has passionately proselytized it's benefits to America on TV, and public appearences, many here such as JR call him socialist and point out his single record in elective office as socialist and creating Romney/Obama care.

Really? I thought we have been always told he is a pro-abortion, pro-gay marriage, liberal- everything the LDS church has taken strong stances against. Can't have it both ways. He seems to be a 'jack Mormon' to me based on his political views. Congressman Chaffetz seems to be more of an image of what that church stands for. Strong pro-life, pro-traditional marriage, etc.

Mormonism = Plural Marriage = Polygamy

President Lincoln was disgusted by “plural marriage” and Mormonism and even signed a law to try to protect America from Mormons and their anti-Christan lifestyle. So now, most (but not all) Mormons keep their plural wives in the closet. The election of a Mormon president would provide the occasion to begin opening that closet door. If we can’t completely extinguish Mormonist perversions, let’s at least keep the closet door closed.

Yes Bishop and Stake President Mitt Romney is among the most devout and holy of Mormons, a member in such high religious standing that he is a temple Mormon, the roughly 15% of Mormons who are so pure and in such high spiritual standing that they are allowed entrance into the Holy Palaces, called Temples.

Roughly 85% of Mormons are forbidden entrance into those high holy Temples and forbidden to witness or have described their secret ceremonies, even a temple Mormon is reexamined every 2 years and required to meet the requirements of purity on a constant basis, or they are returned to the 85% of less pure Mormons.

Bishop Romney who has personally excommunicated Mormons for lack of purity, is always among the most pure, the most devout, the Temple Mormons, as is Harry Reid.

As you are trying your best to drive prejudice between Romney and others with your daily anti-Mormon spew, this article is right up your alley. Or right up your something, anyway.

You’ve become repetitive and boring. You remind me of Willie Green and his trains.

I've been told that many men have been excommunicated so that the excommunicator can take the excommunicated's wives.
