“Issue 1 - Bible only?”
Yes. Along with other verses condemning those who would add to or remove from the clearly inspired books (other posters here address them), Christ had very harsh words for those who adhere to “tradition”. There is enough inconsistency and evil in the history of the traditions in question (despite scrubbing thereof and getting stories straight) to see that it must be questioned, and questioning thereof can only be in light of scripture itself. Only Sola Scriptura remains.
His teachings are recorded in this Gospel, and in the other three Gospels--plus the epistles of Paul and the Apostles. But when Paul talks of the "word"--he is not talking of the New Testament, since it was not yet in existence. And when he used "scriptures"--he was refering to the Old Testament.
Yet, God does use the "word" as it was given to Moses, to His prophets, and through Jesus to the Apostles--to teach us. But, as Jesus told His disciples, He also sends His Holy Spirit to teach us, as is recorded in John 14:26:
"But the Counselor, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you."
One could argue Jesus was talking ONLY to His disciples--but that could easily be seen as limiting being "born from above" to a small group of men, and negating the clear message of the Gospels, especially John 3:16, that salvation is "by grace through faith" for ALL who "receive Him [Jesus], and believe in His name."
And, it is interesting that while verse 9 of Ephesians:
"For it is by grace you have been saved through faith--and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God--not by works, so that no one can boast"
is so often quoted, the VERY NEXT verse is not:
"For we are God's workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God preapred in advance for us to do."
Grace that "saves us" is a gift of God we can NEVER earn--it comes only from what Christ did for us on the cross. But the way we can show our own gratitude--gratias--for this undeserved gift is through faith. And in this faith, we can be about the business of "working out" our salvation, and not working FOR it.
BTW--thanks for this thread. I really enjoyed reading all the comments! God bless you!
