I don’t need anyone on this Earth telling me how to be a Catholic. And I certainly have no use for a Vatican and a pope who makes nice with anti-Christian and anti-Semitic Saracen barbarians. The only pope whom I respected, even loved was John Paul 2.
Actually you do. When you protest and reject the dogmas and teaching authority of the Magisterium and the legitimacy of the Apostolic succession of the pope you reject the Church. You are free to hold those beliefs, just not to also claim that you are a Catholic. You are in effect a Protestant.

"Christians and Muslims, we have many things in common, as believers and as human beings. We live in the same world, marked by many signs of hope, but also by multiple signs of anguish. For us, Abraham is a very model of faith in God, of submission to his will and of confidence in his goodness. We believe in the same God, the one God, the living God, the God who created the world and brings his creatures to their perfection."
- JPII address to young Muslims in Casablanca on 19 August 1985, during the pope's apostolic journey to Morocco
Simple fact: if you are not in union with Rome, you are not a Catholic, or if you like, a Roman Catholic. You are a schismatic.
Rome has taken different position on some things down thru the centuries, and ultimately there is often disagreement as to what official church teaching is, though
your rejection of the modern Vatican would make you more like a sedevacantist, though they reject JP2 while some RC apologists can criticize him quite a lot.
As an evangelical i look to Scripture as being the supreme authority on earth, being the only transcendent material source which is wholly inspired of God. And thus contend for the core essentials we both basically concur with, which cults and Islam reject.
