LOL I love the Rolodexed plates BTW. Too bad they got lost - that would have really helped the cause. Or NOT, as they could have been golden painted wood made to look really really old and with "reformed" lingo such as this:

Is that an “alphabet” or some “text”?

If it’s an “alphabet”, many of the “caractors” are very similar in appearance, like the one that looks like a 2. I see a few iterations/variations on that one alone.
