can you name one instance in the NT when someone decided on their own by reading Scripture what the Scripture meant?

Jesus did exactly that several times.

What you are asking for is something that doesn't happen ~ that is, that a single individual coming up with his own variant reading or understanding suddenly becomes leader of a million member church.

No, a single individual doesn't do that. Christian theology is such that it takes a group to work its way through the materials.
