That was because of Mormonism itself! Just as likely it was because he was in France where participation in Christan religions is almost non existent and the the religion that has the most activity is Islam.

There are Catholic and traditional Christian churches everywhere in France.
Particularly in the 60’s, Mitt would have found many Christians and Catholics ripe for the picking.
