Ask all of the victims of sexual abuse at the hands of pedophile priests... I'm sure they were told how wrong the priests were immediately when it happened...

The Catholic church didn't admit to ANYTHING until the victims of the child molesting priests took it to secular courts because they HAD to because the Catholic church wasn't doing anything about it except covering for those priests.
It's only when the negative publicity shined a spotlight into that dark corner of immorality and corruption that they responded to do damage control.
