What it relates to is what every cult does, which is making themselves as assuredly infallible dispensers of truth, and making something besides Scripture - which was essentially established as Divine by the power of God in effects, conflation and supernatural attestation - as equal to it.
The devil wanted to be equal n authority with God, and effectively presented himself up as the competing supreme authority on truth, and while he used Scripture, he denied what it said with his own “revelation,” and likewise Joseph Smith, with its BOM, and Living Prophet, and likewise Rome exalted herself as the supreme assuredly infallible authority, and made her nebulous, unverifiable, open ended oral Tradition equal to it, out which she channels unScriptural traditions of men.
Of course, since she has infallibly defined herself as assuredly perpetually infallible, when speaking in accordance with her infallibly defined subject and scope-based formula - thus rendering her own declaration of infallibility to be infallible (which is not dependent upon the weight of Scriptural evidence, but while that may be presumed, the guarantee of infallibly does not extend to the arguments or reasoning behind them) - then no one can correct her.
The error of the Pharisees was presuming that formal decent conferred permanent magisterial authority, but in contrast, the authority of the Lord and His apostles was not established by their sanction, but by confirmation of Scripture and supernatural attestation, which the church of the living God evidences by the gospel of grace which effects manifest regeneration, versus institutional religion.
