Sometimes Catholic Universities think they won’t be respected by other universities as academically independent, fully scientific and rigorous and objective if they don’t do something ‘edgy’ and provocative, like inviting a controversial speaker, or showing the ‘Vagina Monologues’ or something.

It’s like the playground. Sometimes these colleges just want to be cool and fit in.

Personally, I haven’t sent to check to my relatively Catholic Alma Mater in over ten years. Sad.

Posted here on FR is a speech given by Archbishop Chaput on just the observation you have made. I’ll try to find it an ping you to it if I can. It’s worth the read.

I am a graduate of two Catholic Universities (Detroit and Dayton). I sent both my children to Catholic high schools, but a Catholic college wasn't even a consideration. Why spend $40k a year to send a child to Sienna College when its values are no different that a state school that costs $20k for tuition, room and board?
