I guess it all depends on how *sympathy* is defined.

I think RCC *sympathy* is defined as "what kind of penance am I going to have to perform for those ways I sinned in thought, word, and deed. I know, I'll show "sympathy" and maybe I'll get off with a few "Hail Marys" and a fast or a charitable gift to the poor. That'll work."

Spare me from the *sympathy* of a Catholic. Ive endured too much of that in my life.
I see it as a deep need for wanted what we have but too proud to admit it. What they are screaming for is sympathy for themselves and the bondage they are in - they are 'in' but can't get 'out' - since it's all they know and pride holds them there.
