Pull out your own mote of “smugness” before criticizing mine.
The building is not the issue. It is that every Protestant seems to have the Puritan/John Calvin Disease of thinking they have the right to interpret the scripture for themselves.
Not only is that unscriptural, but contrary to the traditions and teachings of the Holy Church, from the very beginning. God never intended scripture to be apart from his Church, because that evil is why there are myriad sects, each believing their own interpretation. Hence the Jim Jones, David Koresh, Moonies, etc.

You confuse "smug" with "secure". Every believer has the God-given ability and right to interpret God's word. You see, they have the Holy Spirit dwelling in them. Not a group of men dwelling in Rome. The Holy Spirit will lead you into all truth. Rome will lead you into the same place that Jim Jones, David Koresh, Moonies, etc. led those who put their God-given abilities aside in order to follow men. They are all the same. Placing words of men over God's word to men. One group goes to the jungle to worship and serve their master, Jim Jones. Another group goes to Waco to serve their master, David Koresh. Another group goes to Rome to worship their master, the Pope. It's the Satan/"yea, did God say" Disease that has killed, is killing and in the end, will kill all who follow the steps of men.
You haven't even BEGUN to be criticized, Tex. I would have to take your posts as serious before the reprooving, and rebuking with all longsuffering and DOCTRINE began.
"Contrary to the traditions and teachings of the Holy Church"? There's your first problem.

Disease of thinking they have the right to interpret the scripture for themselves.
Pity to be so ill informed. God's children are saved and filled with the Holy Spirit. God is a Spirit and He speaks Spirit to Spirit. His Spirit to my spirit. God's Word is Holy Spirit inspired.
Notice God says 'man' and 'he' - individual - NO church involved. It's ALL about a personal relationship.
The man without the Spirit does not accept the things that come from the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness to him, and he cannot understand them, because they are spiritually discerned.
Not only is that unscriptural, but contrary to the traditions and teachings of the Holy Church, from the very beginning. God never intended scripture to be apart from his Church,
Well the CC traditions/teachings do NOT line up with God's Word - in fact, they void It as Scripture teachings. "Thus you nullify the Word of God by your tradition that you have handed down. And you do many things like that." Mark 7:13
"The Spirit Himself testifies with our spirit that we are children of God". Romans 8:16 Do you see anything about a church there? NO!
"But the Comforter, which is the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you.John 14:26
"As for you, the anointing which you received from Him abides in you, and you have NO NEED for anyone to teach you; but as His anointing teaches you about all things, and is true and is not a lie, and just as It has taught you, you abide in Him." 1 John 2:27
So you see NO church involved, The Spirit is The Teacher - His Spirit to my spirit and no need for anyone to teach me and I am not interpreting His Word on my own but have the Spirit of God teaching His own Word - One on one.
each believing their own interpretation.
Well, that statement can go in the heap pile now. The HS is the Teacher and HE is ONE Teacher of His own spiritually discerned Word.
Hence the Jim Jones, David Koresh, Moonies, etc.
Man teaching man - hence the Catholic Church.
