Religion: No Hooters Shirts in Mass, Please
The Seattle Times ^ | 9/5/11 | Terry Mattingly

Americans getting more casual in what they wear to church.

Deacon Greg Kandra was well aware that modern Americans were getting more casual and that these laid-back attitudes were filtering into Catholic pews.

Still, was that woman who was approaching the altar to receive Holy Communion really wearing a Hooters shirt?

Yes, she was.

When did Catholics, he thought to himself, start coming to Mass dressed for a Britney Spears concert? Had he missed a memo or something?

"Somewhere along the way, we went from neckties to tank tops, and from fasting to fast food. And it's getting worse," noted Kandra, a former CBS News writer with 26 years, two Emmys and two Peabody Awards to his credit. He is now a deacon assigned to Our Lady Queen of Martyrs, a 3,000-member parish in Forest Hills, just north of New York City.

"I recently had to tell a couple that no, they could not have their Chihuahua in a tuxedo as part of their wedding party,"he added, in a Patheos.com commentary. "An auxiliary bishop in Indianapolis recently complained about people who tweet during funerals. Casual Catholics, it seems, have taken 'casual' to a new level."

After the Hooters incident, he decided it was time to stop whining about the rising tide of irreverence and immodesty and to start griping about it right out in the open. Thus, Kandra and the parish's other clergy have resorted to appealing — in the parish bulletin and in public remarks — for a hint of sanity or even some old-fashioned decorum.

One bulletin item proclaimed, with a gag headline: "PLANS FOR PARISH SWIMMING POOL SCRAPPED! After much study, our finance committee has determined it would not be feasible to construct an indoor swimming pool in our church. ... As a result, we can now announce.........

Some church's actually promote casual worship. Regardless of the faith it is disrespectful. One dresses up for things they are serious about.

it's just a slice of our dead, stupid culture. memo to guys who complain about "scantily clad women" distracting them: stop watching porn and you'll be able to concentrate on what you should concentrate on. If you can't manage your eyes, it's your problem, not hers.

Next up: as posted elsewhere, giving me that same creepy feeling as when I started seeing "Obama 2008" baseball caps at Sunday Mass are the presence of assorted queers at Mass now -- men who just give of that "vibe" who make big stinking production about just sitting down, so that the entire creation must take notice of them.

Forest Hills is IN NYC. It is part of Queens, and isn't even particularly north, unless you define Brooklyn as NYC.

Everything the '60's (tried to) change(d) has been found to be the demise of American fabric and values.

Say what you will about Norman Rockwell's politics ... he saw what we did ... or wanted to see.

Nuns in plain clothes and fahthah without a collar?

Mea maxima culpa, dear Catholics.

The KEY is found in the last paragraph:

“”I often ask people this question: ‘Would you dress like that if you were going to meet the queen of England?’ Of course, they always say, ‘No, of course not.’ Then I remind them that they are coming to Mass in order to meet someone more special than the queen. They are coming to meet their king.””

There are many Catholics who no longer truly understand the REAL PRESENCE.

The creator of Idiocracy, Mike Judge, was inspired to create Beavis and B-head by a couple of miscreants at Mass who were chuckling inappropriately.

“One dresses up for things they are serious about.”

You mean like the Apostles who wore a robe with sandals.

There was a reason for that, and it probably had nothing to do with showing off tits.

Sure it was the culture to wear clothes like that.

Just like now its the culture to dress casual and not a suit.

Would you keep someone from seeking salvation because they weren’t wearing a suit?

Or at least for everyone in Rome and its immediate vicinity.

Those on the other side of the world wore loinclothes, still others wore incredibly intricate silk masterpieces which made Ceasar’s robes look common.

not up to me, is it?

However, if you're "seeking salvation," you have a little work to do before taking communion in a Catholic church.

>>You mean like the Apostles who wore a robe with sandals.

If those Apostoles had a closet full of clothes at home, do you think they would have worn their Hooters t-shirt to spend time with Jesus?

There is nothing that says you MUST NOT have impure thoughts. The thoughts may be mere temptations....and they can be overcome. Actually, one must avoid the near occasions of sin.....which can encourage impure thoughts and/or sinful actions. If you are Catholic, you should know and understand this.

;-)

This is really awful logic. First, who's talking about "seeking salvation?" Second, are you saying that wearing a Hooters shirt is merely "casual," just a notch less formal than wearing a suit?

And then, of course, you personalize it, which is invalid and even malicious.

You know, it's just no fun to try to reason with someone who carries an intellectual switchblade.
