It just occurred to me, a propos of not much, that the Birth of Mary reminds us that God has grandparents! And it seems to me that all this Marian hoopla comes down to the appalling humility of the Son. Celebration of grandparents and of Mary drives home what a gracious act of true condescension — in the best sense — the Incarnation is.

When the entire basis of your existence is anti-, then it's all you have. We cannot expect any more from them, except the cream who rise to the surface and in spite of themselves cross the Tiber, or head East. We have some notable converts in this crowd who surpass me in their understanding of the Faith.
