My Faith: Rep. Keith Ellison (D-MN), from Catholic to Muslim
CNN ^ | 9/1/11 | Chris Welch

Posted on 09/02/2011 9:07:47 AM PDT by marshmallow

Minneapolis, Minnesota (CNN) –Prior to 2006, few people even knew that then-Minnesota state legislator Keith Ellison was a Muslim. Because of his English name, he said, no one thought to ask.

But five years ago, when he ran for a seat in the United States House of Representatives - a race he would go on to win - word of his religious affiliation began to spread.

“When I started running for Congress it actually took me by surprise that so many people were fascinated with me being the first Muslim in Congress,” said Ellison, a Democrat now serving his third term in the House.

“But someone said to me, ‘Look Keith, think of a person of Japanese origin running for Congress six years after Pearl Harbor–this might be a news story.’”

Though Ellison's status as the first Muslim elected to Congress is widely known, fewer are aware that he was born into a Catholic family in Detroit and was brought up attending Catholic schools.

But he said he was never comfortable with that faith.

“I just felt it was ritual and dogma,” Ellison said. “Of course, that’s not the reality of Catholicism, but it’s the reality I lived. So I just kind of lost interest and stopped going to Mass unless I was required to.”

It wasn’t until he was a student at Wayne State University in Detroit when Ellison began, “looking for other things.”

Did you tell them about Jesus?.... ARE YOU NUTS?

I take that as a 'no'. LOL!!

I let God guide me and I'm not afraid of what man can do to me. That's the blessing of being Holy Spirit filled!

Everything you said about yourself is also true of me. You appear to assume that what you said is not true of Catholics. Calling us non-Christian, AGAIN? I STILL want the comforts my Church offers to the dying. Protestant Churches don’t have much to offer, as far as I have seen.

“Oh, Lord, I know, I have no Friend but you,
This world is not my home, Lord what can I do?
Angels beckon me from heaven’s open door
and I don’t feel at home in this world anymore.”

Actually, Trent forbids having assurance that you will never fall away, except if you have that assurance by “special revelation.” http://history.hanover.edu/early/trent/ct06.html]

This is subjective, yet ascertaining truth on the basis of interpreting Scripture is attacked as “private interpretation” (based upon 2Pt. 1:20 which is not teaching that), while Acts 17:ll affirms this means and 1Jn. 5:13 appeals to such in referring to providence of the truth and criteria by which one may know that they presently have eternal life.

Good night.

How many jobs have you been fired from for Christian witness? Been thrown out of any stores? Which mosques do you picket? No fear? Prove it!

Thank you Daniel. Some people may be jealous that they lack the theological intellect that is so apparently available on that site http://peacebyjesus.witnesstoday.org. It is a jewel of knowledge, as are you.

"I let God guide me and I'm not afraid of what man can do to me."

Preach the Gospel at all times, and when necessary use words. - St. Francis of Assisi

I'll bet that has won more hearts for Christ than your in-your-face proselytizing.

why this site can be considered anti-Catholic

More like anti-Word because we have many catechism believers here.

I also think this is an excellent article concerning the Early Church Fathers and their views on Holy Scripture: http://peacebyjesus.witnesstoday.org/Ancients_on_Scripture.html

I think you’re missing the whole point: we don’t care about having a “functional knowledge” of Scripture. A “functional knowledge” of Scripture is NOT the focus of Catholicism.

Just wow...... What an indictment of Catholicism.

You are obsessed with memorizing the Bible

And that's a problem for what reason?

Psalm 1:1-3 1Blessed is the man who walks not in the counsel of the wicked, nor stands in the way of sinners, nor sits in the seat of scoffers; 2but his delight is in the law of the LORD, and on his law he meditates day and night. 3He is like a tree planted by streams of water that yields its fruit in its season, and its leaf does not wither. In all that he does, he prospers.

Psalm 119:11 11I have stored up your word in my heart, that I might not sin against you.

Do you suppose you would even HAVE A BIBLE IF NOT FOR THE CATHOLIC MONKS preserving them and copying them in monasteries for centuries while everything else was destroyed? If you love your Bible, you are indebted for sure to the Catholic Church.

We can thank the Jews for the entire OT. And can you say *Dead Sea Scrolls*?

And you know for sure that the only copies of the NT were kept by monks..... how?

Hate fest against Catholics? Umm, no, try again. You're making two very basic mistakes.

First, you're assuming that Quix is attacking Roman Catholicism in general. A careful reading of his posts proves that this is not the case. Yes, he's attacking certain beliefs but considering what he's attacking, I don't see it as hate. After all, you're acting like he shouldn't be calling out false teaching when he sees it, which leads me to my second point where I believe you've made a mistake.

You're assuming that a Christian cannot hate false teachings, call them out for what they are and still remain free from sin. I understand that it's probably because he's goring your ox, so to speak, but please try to pay attention to what he's saying, not just how he's saying it.

your in-your-face proselytizing.

Show me where I said I do in-your-face proselytizing. Are you using your faulty mind reading skills again?

Since catholics bow to man and their words - why don't you take his advice Preach the Gospel at all times, and when necessary use words. - St. Francis of Assisi Now that would be a treat! LOL!

You see I HEAR and OBEY Jesus The Word ALONE. Kinda tough for a catholic to do that because that would make them a non-catholic. Then a heretic, then excommunication! Oh the horror! LOL!

Praise You God for Your Word - Thank YOU, JESUS The Word! For no one will snatch me from YOUR HAND!

I don’t really even hate Shrillery or OThuga. I hate what they do and stand for.

I hate satan’s assaults on believers.

I certainly don’t hate RC’s.

I don’t even hate the whole of the RC edifice.

I hate some of the demonic deceptions that are part of it because they seduce folks away from God toward hell.

I gather you’re unacquainted with the concept of “tough love?”
