My Faith: Rep. Keith Ellison (D-MN), from Catholic to Muslim
CNN ^ | 9/1/11 | Chris Welch

Posted on 09/02/2011 9:07:47 AM PDT by marshmallow

Minneapolis, Minnesota (CNN) –Prior to 2006, few people even knew that then-Minnesota state legislator Keith Ellison was a Muslim. Because of his English name, he said, no one thought to ask.

But five years ago, when he ran for a seat in the United States House of Representatives - a race he would go on to win - word of his religious affiliation began to spread.

“When I started running for Congress it actually took me by surprise that so many people were fascinated with me being the first Muslim in Congress,” said Ellison, a Democrat now serving his third term in the House.

“But someone said to me, ‘Look Keith, think of a person of Japanese origin running for Congress six years after Pearl Harbor–this might be a news story.’”

Though Ellison's status as the first Muslim elected to Congress is widely known, fewer are aware that he was born into a Catholic family in Detroit and was brought up attending Catholic schools.

But he said he was never comfortable with that faith.

“I just felt it was ritual and dogma,” Ellison said. “Of course, that’s not the reality of Catholicism, but it’s the reality I lived. So I just kind of lost interest and stopped going to Mass unless I was required to.”

It wasn’t until he was a student at Wayne State University in Detroit when Ellison began, “looking for other things.”

"I will as soon as you study the Bible and tell me where Catholic doctrines can be found."

Just as I thought, All hat and no cattle. You haven't a clue and your only familiarity with Catholic doctrine is what you have learned from the anti-Catholic mouth breathers on FR. I'll bet you thought no one would call your bluff.

Do not make this thread "about" another Freeper or read his mind. That is "making it personal."

Discuss the issues all you want, but do not make it personal.

that gives them some sort of control

But that is exactly what the leadership not only wants but needs over their membership. It is the same with all organizations and institutes but especially when there is a religious aspect as part of it....and we know what power does over time.

There was a reason why Jesus said 'no man can come to the Father except by me'.....and He does not share His position with any man.... ...And also why he said we would 'be free' thru Him alone and no other....He is enough... and He is sufficient for all that we need. We belong to Him not the other way around....though some certainly sound like He's the Genie in their lamp rather than 'King of Glory.'

BTW....Have you ever had a day where you just want so to be one to one with Him, face to face, eye to eye? How can one explain such longing of heart, mind and soul? Makes one feel like David who sought hard after God.....goes deep into ones very soul.

“It seems that the Catholics want to take credit for the writing of Scripture, the preservation of Scripture, and the interpretation of Scripture, so that they can make us feel like we have to *owe* them for it, and that gives them some sort of control over us or makes us somehow indebted to them for it.

It seems like they just cannot stand the thought of someone doing something outside of their control; that if they can somehow own it and convince everyone else of that, they can control its use.

Sorry, not buying.....”

So, scripture was preserved by whom? or what? There were no printing presses, most people were illiterate, there was really only the spoken word. So how did the Apostles teach? (I’m thinking they taught the way most Rabbis taught. Orally)

How was most teaching about Christ taught? Isn’t it safe to say that most teaching was oral? There were epistles but those was sent to the local bishops not to the Christians in the pews.

And another thing, why do you have this feeling of being not adequate enough? So the CC teaches that the scripture came through the Church. So what! You actually accept Catholic teaching, because you believe the Bible is the Word of God. You just don’t want to believe that the Catholic Church had anything to do with it.

And you are just as I thought. All words and yet, seemingly clueless. Call my bluff? Ha! I tell you, I may not sleep tonight, my bluff has been called by someone who believes that Catholic doctrine is equal to God's word.

But you still have a chance to be a real bluff buster. Why was Paul not chosen as the 12th Disciple? What does your doctrine say/excuse about that? Mouth breathers on FR? I've seen more drooling from gnashing and wailing on the other side than I care to recall. So. Wipe your mouth and find out why Paul wasn't the 12th.

He sent a book 'missing' some sacred scripture.

That statement sends up a red flag immediately to any familiar with the tactics of the enemy of men's souls.

"In all truth, I think Catholics can believe whatever they want as long as they give up the claim that they alone are the one true church of Christ and that no one can be saved outside of her."

It's actually none of any non-Catholic's business what Catholics believe. I only post on these threads to ensure that what is said about the Catholicism is truthful and accurate. Besides why do any non-Cathilics care what the Catholics believe if they don't put any credence in it? They go well out of their way on a daily basis to distance themselves from Catholic doctrine and then insist that Catholics have the right to only believe in the portions of our doctrines they agree with. Do they insist that the Hindu's give up portions of the Ramayana so they don't offend their sensibilities?

I'll repeat the crux of my initial post #5 that has been since been deleted. I am comforted that the Church does not compromise its doctrines to accommodate the ignorance and hatred of people like the anti-Catholics and the many other famous and not so famous ex-Catholics who pile on tho these threads

Beautiful video, thank you for directing me to it. Only sorry I waited so long to watch. I actually had almost forgotten until your most recent post and so I went back and found it.

Love it. All praise and glory be to God.

Real original. Sorry, I’m too busy to be offended. Something better to do. And too busy to care what silly game is afoot.

Was I talking to you? Because I’m too busy to be side-tracked by any more of your priceless irony tonight.

I think it's a safe bet that Paul considered eve pretty much off to one side. Still the use of anthropos is at least interesting - perhaps suggesting Adam as representative of humankind rather than of guys.

Adam, of course, is used to represent the entire future human race, but it had to start somewhere with some one man and it WAS Adam.

I never bothered to get my concordance out of the attic when I found this website: http://www.tgm.org/bible.htm. It works GREAT! You can search for verses using a word or a phrase, you can see it in about 50 different English versions as well as other languages AND it has a built in concordance and lexicon. It makes it very easy to copy and paste Scriptures to comments. Hope you aren't wearing yourself out with the move. Some boxes I never did unpack and we've been here five years.

Oh, pardon me, I didn’t know that protestants distinguished between individual Catholics. And your post is near a word for word copy of mine. Did you notice?

You are clearly not too busy to be uncharitable. More of that Living in the Holy Spirit being demonstrated, I suppose. If that’s what daily reading of the Bible teaches your group, it’s probably better to stick to the magesterium.

IIRC

there was a hole where the one foci was and a dot where the other one was.

Isn’t it the case that a ball sent across the dot would then fall in the hole at the other foci regardless of what direction it was shot from?

Seems like that’s the case in my fuzzy memory of it.

Yes, Judith Anne. My posts to you are always nearly word for word copies of what you say. It's to point out the irony in your posts. You jump into something, state your vitriol and move on. Uncharitable? Do you not have a mirror in your home? You, the one, who would refuse to work next to someone in a soup kitchen?

I repeat your ironic posts back to you in order for you to hopefully see the irony yourself. Lost cause.
