Minneapolis, Minnesota (CNN) Prior to 2006, few people even knew that then-Minnesota state legislator Keith Ellison was a Muslim. Because of his English name, he said, no one thought to ask.
But five years ago, when he ran for a seat in the United States House of Representatives - a race he would go on to win - word of his religious affiliation began to spread.
When I started running for Congress it actually took me by surprise that so many people were fascinated with me being the first Muslim in Congress, said Ellison, a Democrat now serving his third term in the House.
But someone said to me, Look Keith, think of a person of Japanese origin running for Congress six years after Pearl Harborthis might be a news story.
Though Ellison's status as the first Muslim elected to Congress is widely known, fewer are aware that he was born into a Catholic family in Detroit and was brought up attending Catholic schools.
But he said he was never comfortable with that faith.
I just felt it was ritual and dogma, Ellison said. Of course, thats not the reality of Catholicism, but its the reality I lived. So I just kind of lost interest and stopped going to Mass unless I was required to.
It wasnt until he was a student at Wayne State University in Detroit when Ellison began, looking for other things.

What’s sinful about it?
You don't think a total lack of mention of her from the book of ACTS onward is a good clue?
Flowery? Really? Not to me. It's as technical as a theology manual.
Rarely have I felt so deceived. We are not told that the Eucharist is the Spriritual Body of Christ that we believers belong to. We are told that it is the ACTUAL BODY AND BLOOD OF CHRIST. You wouldn’t be playing some semantics games now would you? And yes, Mary’s immaculate conception would require her to be present in the Eucharist. If He was part of her body, He contained part of her DNA, and that DNA is part of His Body. So when His body is turned from wafers and wine into THE ACTUAL BODY AND BLOOD of Christ, as your Mass teaches and believes, then Mary’s part of that ACTUAL BODY AND BLOOD OF CHRIST would HAVE TO BE PRESENT. Otherwise, He is not COMPLETELY there.
So, you don’t have one. Got it.
Are you free from sin, due to Christs sacrifice? If you are, she is.Christians are free from the penalty of sin, but still sin.
Are you saying Mary was sinless, but still sinned?
We're dealing in clues?
Some might consider a false accusation to the Savior a no no.
I've got a question here. How is the Nicene Creed Anti-Biblical? What did I miss here, because I've read it and it's as Biblical as you can get.
We're dealing in clues? No, just double standards, apparently.
There goes Ephesus and Chalcedon. We have two persons here. But there is one Christ, not two.
My mother did not provide the y chromosome, but she is the mother of all of me. Mary did not provide the Divine nature, but she is the mother of all of Jesus who IS Jesus Christ, who IS God the Son of God. There is no part of God the Son of God which is not Jesus and no part of Jesus which is not God the Son of God. He is one person.
Or so we hold. Remember, the Marian stuff all arose out of a Christological controversy.
What do you care? Are you putting me under your scriptural microscope for fun? I’m not having fun, and I quit. You said Mary’s role was finished when she gave birth to Christ. I asked for scriptural proof. You furnished none, and changed the question.
Are you free from sin? Or not? Are you “in Christ” as Paul says, or not? What does that mean to you? Are you washed whiter than snow? And what do you care what I say about Mary? You have mede it clear you believe none of it, so, forget it. Go find some other Catholic to play your proddy games.
Two Christs? Hardly. He was/is 100% man. He was/is 100% God.
So, we ask for chapter and verse of those who demand chapter and verse from us and that’s a double standard?
What did Mary say that was false?
Imperfect??? You mean like they got a little bit right so they are ok??? Your muzlim apologetics is disgusting...
1Jn 5:11 And this is the record, that God hath given to us eternal life, and this life is in his Son.
1Jn 5:12 He that hath the Son hath life; and he that hath not the Son of God hath not life.
Simple as that...Your muzlim brethren are not just a little bit Christian...
And it is not my Church. God has me; I do not have him. Remember?
Only if you've ever called on Jesus to save you...Where's your testimony of your conversion to Jesus???
Joh 5:39 Search the scriptures; for in them ye think ye have eternal life: and they are they which testify of me.
Joh 5:40 And ye will not come to me, that ye might have life.
So saying Islam is simply a "false worship" or incomplete worship of the true God shows incredible ignorance of their faith. There is just no excuse for your church leaders to state such falsehoods just so that they can appear "ecumenical".
Nope, they simply understand how things are. This is the wisdom of the Magisterium, not the god that so many Protestants see starting back at them when they look in the mirror.
Your magisterium has man's wisdom, not the wisdom from God...
And for anyone who doubts it, Adam and Eve had Scripture that was just one verse long and they STILL blew it.
Actually, if you've ever bothered to really read what quix wrote, that's exactly what he SAID and it's not mind reading to say that that is what quix thinks when he's said as much.
It's disingenuous to accuse someone of mind reading when it's simply a matter of having good reading comprehension skills.
It was you who said:
"then she becomes responsible for the HUMAN Jesus and not the GOD Jesus Christ.
nI'mnot sure what you mean by "responsible" but IF he is ONE, then she is the Mother of God. That just follows. IF she's the mother of the man but not the God, then he is not one.
Just for the record here, I understand the concept here of the Hypostatic Union of Christ's divinity and humanity but I don't understand the actual mechanics involved beyond understanding that just as there are "Three Hypostases in one Ousia" there is likewise a Hypostasis of divinity and humanity in Christ's being.
That being said, carry on!
