My Faith: Rep. Keith Ellison (D-MN), from Catholic to Muslim
CNN ^ | 9/1/11 | Chris Welch

Posted on 09/02/2011 9:07:47 AM PDT by marshmallow

Minneapolis, Minnesota (CNN) –Prior to 2006, few people even knew that then-Minnesota state legislator Keith Ellison was a Muslim. Because of his English name, he said, no one thought to ask.

But five years ago, when he ran for a seat in the United States House of Representatives - a race he would go on to win - word of his religious affiliation began to spread.

“When I started running for Congress it actually took me by surprise that so many people were fascinated with me being the first Muslim in Congress,” said Ellison, a Democrat now serving his third term in the House.

“But someone said to me, ‘Look Keith, think of a person of Japanese origin running for Congress six years after Pearl Harbor–this might be a news story.’”

Though Ellison's status as the first Muslim elected to Congress is widely known, fewer are aware that he was born into a Catholic family in Detroit and was brought up attending Catholic schools.

But he said he was never comfortable with that faith.

“I just felt it was ritual and dogma,” Ellison said. “Of course, that’s not the reality of Catholicism, but it’s the reality I lived. So I just kind of lost interest and stopped going to Mass unless I was required to.”

It wasn’t until he was a student at Wayne State University in Detroit when Ellison began, “looking for other things.”

I'm surprised that Metmom has to tell you what your own Catechism says. Here, I'll help:

While you have to work hard to fabricate an endorsement of Islam by the Church no such stretch is necessary linking Calvinism and Islam. In many respects they are identical and in many more they are eerily similar.

"Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ." Rom. 5:1.

Our struggle is over. And we know that those who laugh at our security and thinks we are fools do not see themselves in their own folly. "Who is he that condemneth? It is Christ that died, yea rather, that is risen again, who is even at the right hand of God, who also maketh intercession for us." Rom. 8:34.

There is no one day up, next day down, victim/victor status on this side. Our past is forgotten, our present is led, and our future is secure. Because we are already forgiven. Not waiting/hoping to be. That's where spiritual bipolar symptons come from. No peace. No security. No end to the work.

“And if by grace, it is not now by works: otherwise grace is no more grace.”

No sacraments, no church, no “good works” no rituals or traditions.. no meditrix, no rosary,...nothing but the finished work of Christ ..thats it Mark.. if men depend on their works or obedience to the law.. it is not of grace..

Unfortunately, 841 does not say that Catholicism is more accepting of Islam than Protestantism. It does not reference or otherwise indicate anything about Protestants at all. metmom is correct in not quoting this as evidence. Do you have anything else from the Catechism to support metmom's false claim?

In case you don't please think on this: there are certain Christian ministers that are accepted almost directly into the Faith as priests. There have never been nor will there ever be Islamic clergy that will be accorded the same honour. Something to ponder whilst you are engaging with your own Sherpa.

Getting back to the topic of the "First Muslim in Congress", I found this article of great interest concerning Mr. Ellison's honesty about his religion:

Romans 4:1-7 1What then shall we say was gained by Abraham, our forefather according to the flesh? 2For if Abraham was justified by works, he has something to boast about, but not before God. 3For what does the Scripture say? "Abraham believed God, and it was counted to him as righteousness." 4Now to the one who works, his wages are not counted as a gift but as his due. 5And to the one who does not work but believes in him who justifies the ungodly, his faith is counted as righteousness, 6just as David also speaks of the blessing of the one to whom God counts righteousness apart from works: 7 "Blessed are those whose lawless deeds are forgiven, and whose sins are covered; 8blessed is the man against whom the Lord will not count his sin."

Romans 6:22-23;7:4-6

22But now that you have been set free from sin and have become slaves of God, the fruit you get leads to sanctification and its end, eternal life. 23 For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.......7:4Likewise, my brothers, you also have died to the law through the body of Christ, so that you may belong to another, to him who has been raised from the dead, in order that we may bear fruit for God. 5For while we were living in the flesh, our sinful passions, aroused by the law, were at work in our members to bear fruit for death. 6But now we are released from the law, having died to that which held us captive, so that we serve in the new way of the Spirit and not in the old way of the written code.

“And if by grace, it is not now by works: otherwise grace is no more grace.”

Paul is correct; it is you guys who get it wrong. The Grace of God enables our salvation; it guarantees our inheritance to salvation in Christ.

Yet if we walk away as the Prodigal Son did, we forfeit our inheritance. It is not until we return, as he did, beating our breasts in sorrow and plead for forgiveness, that we will gain that inheritance. The tax collector in the back of the church, not the Gnostic Pharasiacal Reformed who claim knowledge, surety and the elevated position as presaved in the Kingdom of Heaven.

Christians have the hope of Paul, not the surety of the Calvinist select. You may accuse the Church of claiming to give salvation but that is not the Church's position. We begin with Grace; without Grace there is nothing. With Grace, we have faith, hope, and love.

Not arrogant coronation of the Elect.

Until the end. If your faith wavers, you go into eternal fire, just as Peter's faith wavered and he almost fell into the drink. Do you guys not read what you post?

22But now that you have been set free from sin and have become slaves of God, the fruit you get leads to sanctification and its end, eternal life. 23 For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.

That's what we are saying. If you remain out of sin and stay in Christ, the way is to eternal salvation. If you do not, then your prize is eternal damnation.

7:4Likewise, my brothers, you also have died to the law through the body of Christ, so that you may belong to another, to him who has been raised from the dead, in order that we may bear fruit for God. 5For while we were living in the flesh, our sinful passions, aroused by the law, were at work in our members to bear fruit for death. 6But now we are released from the law, having died to that which held us captive, so that we serve in the new way of the Spirit and not in the old way of the written code.

Only as long as you remain in Christ. If you return to living in the flesh, your wages will be death.

The words are there, the meaning is there, why is it that you guys do not have eyes to see?

What Catholics teach is Christianity, believed by all Christians going right back to the Apostles. The Apostles taught this. The Church Fathers taught this. It is not until the intellect of Martin Luther and Jean Cauvin that we discovered that everyone going back to and including Jesus was wrong, and it is only certain recent and very tortured interpretations of Paul that are correct.

Being a redeemed child of God is not a on again/off again proposition; now you're in/ooops, you're out based on some church criteria of what your behavior should be according to their standards.

Salvation is a gift from God which He freely bestows on those who receive it through faith. We are sealed with the promised Holy Spirit given us as a guarantee until the day of our redemption.

God is not an Indian giver.

When we become His child we are born into His family and He will not disown us if we slip and sent us to hell for the least little infraction just because we're human.

John 10:28-30 28 I give them eternal life, and they will never perish, and no one will snatch them out of my hand. 29My Father, who has given them to me, is greater than all, and no one is able to snatch them out of the Father’s hand. 30 I and the Father are one."

Philippians 1:6

And I am sure of this, that he who began a good work in you will bring it to completion at the day of Jesus Christ.

Galatians 3

1O foolish Galatians! Who has bewitched you? It was before your eyes that Jesus Christ was publicly portrayed as crucified. 2Let me ask you only this: Did you receive the Spirit by works of the law or by hearing with faith? 3Are you so foolish? Having begun by the Spirit, are you now being perfected by the flesh? 4 Did you suffer so many things in vain—if indeed it was in vain? 5Does he who supplies the Spirit to you and works miracles among you do so by works of the law, or by hearing with faith— 6just as Abraham “believed God, and it was counted to him as righteousness”?

7Know then that it is those of faith who are the sons of Abraham. 8And the Scripture, foreseeing that God would justify the Gentiles by faith, preached the gospel beforehand to Abraham, saying, “In you shall all the nations be blessed.” 9So then, those who are of faith are blessed along with Abraham, the man of faith.

10For all who rely on works of the law are under a curse; for it is written, “Cursed be everyone who does not abide by all things written in the Book of the Law, and do them.” 11Now it is evident that no one is justified before God by the law, for “The righteous shall live by faith.” 12But the law is not of faith, rather “The one who does them shall live by them.” 13Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law by becoming a curse for us—for it is written, “Cursed is everyone who is hanged on a tree”— 14so that in Christ Jesus the blessing of Abraham might come to the Gentiles, so that we might receive the promised Spirit through faith.

Well, since I have no "Sherpa", nor a need for one, let's look at Metmom's comment:

By their own admission in the Catechism of the Catholic church.

They are more accepting of Islam than Protestantism.

She was then challenged to produce any reference to Islam or Muslims in the Catholic Catechism. It was there and, not only that, her claim that the Catholic Church was more accepting of Muslims than Protestants is easily seen by what it actually says. She did NOT say the Catechism speaks about Protestants as they do Islam.

Rather than make this the "usual" Catholics vs. Protestants Saturday nite at the war zone, how about we talk about the subject of the thread? I think the fact that we have a Nation of Islam Muslim in Congress is noteworthy, don't you? I think it is cause for concern, don't you?

Only as long as you remain in Christ. If you return to living in the flesh, your wages will be death.

Saved by grace but kept by works ... Salvation by works...

Same old rationalizations. How much Jesus do you need to convince you that your eternal life depends upon the Judgement of your life? Jesus is the Judge.

Matthew 10: 32* Everyone who acknowledges me before others I will acknowledge before my heavenly Father. 33But whoever denies me before others, I will deny before my heavenly Father.s

If you turn your back on Jesus (sin), then you will be lost until you repent and plead for His mercy.

2 Timothy 2: 11This saying is trustworthy: If we have died with him we shall also live with him; i 12if we persevere we shall also reign with him. But if we deny him he will deny us.j 13If we are unfaithful he remains faithful, for he cannot deny himself.k

God is always faithful to us. It is we that are unfaithful to Him. If we remain unfaithful, then He will deny us, though.

Matthew 5: 21“You have heard that it was said to your ancestors,n ‘You shall not kill; and whoever kills will be liable to judgment.’* 22* But I say to you, whoever is angry* with his brother will be liable to judgment,o and whoever says to his brother, ‘Raqa,’ will be answerable to the Sanhedrin, and whoever says, ‘You fool,’ will be liable to fiery Gehenna. 23Therefore, if you bring your gift to the altar, and there recall that your brother has anything against you,p 24leave your gift there at the altar, go first and be reconciled with your brother, and then come and offer your gift. 25Settle with your opponent quickly while on the way to court with him.q Otherwise your opponent will hand you over to the judge, and the judge will hand you over to the guard, and you will be thrown into prison. 26Amen, I say to you, you will not be released until you have paid the last penny.

Do you think Jesus was just kidding here?

Matthew 6: 32All these things the pagans seek. Your heavenly Father knows that you need them all. 33But seek first the kingdom (of God) and his righteousness,* and all these things will be given you besides.

And if you do not seek the Kingdom of God, you will not receive it.

Matthew 7: 13* “Enter through the narrow gate;* for the gate is wide and the road broad that leads to destruction, and those who enter through it are many.j 14How narrow the gate and constricted the road that leads to life. And those who find it are few.

And those who do not look for it will not find it at all.

Matthew 6: 21“Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven,* but only the one who does the will of my Father in heaven.n 22Many will say to me on that day,o ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name? Did we not drive out demons in your name? Did we not do mighty deeds in your name?’p 23Then I will declare to them solemnly, ‘I never knew you.* Depart from me, you evildoers.’q

Hear ye, hear ye. Jesus says that only those who do the will of the Father will enter the Kingdom of Heaven. If you do not do the will of the Father, you will not be saved. Is that enough works for you or do you need more? When will you pull your figurative head from the bowels of the Reformation and come into the light of Christ? This is Jesus and this is Paul. Not the Reformation's twisted version of Paul, but the real Paul.

metmom- post 96:

841 The Church’s relationship with the Muslims. “The plan of salvation also includes those who acknowledge the Creator, in the first place amongst whom are the Muslims; these profess to hold the faith of Abraham, and together with us they adore the one, merciful God, mankind’s judge on the last day.”330

boatbums- post 100: Try tweaking your search a wee bit. Muslims instead of Muslim or Islam gives this:

http://ccc.scborromeo.org.master.com/texis/master/search/?sufs=0&q=muslims&s=SS

And FWIW, calling people liars while trying to make it look like a joke is still calling people liars. Is that the best you can resort to when you lose the debate?

It is NOT there. I know very well what it says. It in no way intimates or claims or refers to the acceptance of Islam over Protestantism. If you think it's there, prove it. Let's have it - produce the paragraphs or back away. I will not produce the evidence if only for the fact that it is not there.
