21 Priests Suspended in Philadelphia
New York Times ^ | March 8, 2011 | Katharine Q. Seelve

The Archdiocese of Philadelphia announced Tuesday that it had suspended 21 priests from active ministry in connection with accusations that involved sexual abuse or otherwise inappropriate behavior with minors.

The mass suspension was the single-most sweeping in the history of the sexual-abuse scandal in the Roman Catholic Church in the United States, said Terence McKiernan, president of BishopAccountability.org, which archives documents from the abuse scandal in dioceses across the country.

The archdiocese’s action follows a damning grand jury report issued Feb. 10 that accused the archdiocese of a widespread cover-up of predatory priests, stretching over decades, and said that as many as 37 priests remained active in the ministry despite credible accusations against them.

From the article...

"...At a minimum, the scope of the suspensions underscored the grand jury’s contention that the archdiocese had failed to clean house after a grand jury report in 2005 found credible accusations of abuse by 63 priests. And it suggested that potentially, predatory priests had had access to thousands of children for years..."

This story was on page 13 of the "New York Times."

Does anyone not believe that if this story had been "21 Baptist or Presbyterian or Methodist ministers suspended for sexual abuse in Philadelphia," it would be front page news instead of buried on page 13?

Isn’t this the third time this has been posted already? Is it really necessary to post it again?

I always wondered why anybody would continue to donate to the Catholic church, when a good portion of that money will probably have to go lawyers and victims of sexual abuse cases.

It wouldn't have been in the paper at all.

When the majority of the recruits are homos how can we expect any thing but this kind of action from them?

Amen!

If things don't change, it's not wrong to conclude Rome wants it this way.

Only under wraps.

No, this story hasn’t been posted. The number of suspended priests is quickly increasing.

That can only be good news.

Exactly. Yet many in the congregation are told their offerings are not going to pay these abuse court cases.

When they find out they were lied to, they're understandably upset.

Just how upset is difficult to determine.

I do! In the 1930’s the communists sent 11,000 men to join seminaries and destroy the Catholic church. They pretended to be Catholics and went on to preach, and some became leaders. The church has suffered greatly. Christ warned us that we would be attacked. I give gladly to revive the church.

Okay. The title is almost exactly the same as two other articles. I did not check the content.

Good news, yes, as long as the accused priests are truly guilty and not just getting caught up in a witch hunt. I’m all for getting the homosexual priests out of the church so that the remaining 90-something percent of Catholic priests can go on with the amazing work they do without being afraid of false accusations.

Do you have a source for this claim?

That doesn’t even make sense. Catholics want the mess cleaned up. And in all my years in the Catholic church I’ve NEVER heard a priest say anything like that.

Yes, it was right here on FR. You can find it under “Catholic” in the search engine.

What’s with these so-called “gay” predators? Sure...being a homosexual is normal and acceptable. Sure..

A celibate clergy makes no sense. What you end up with is a clergy dominated by men with a lot of baggage. Most normal men would not take up this vocation, while deviants would. The deviant feels that by taking the vow of celibacy he can be free of his deviancy, but it never works. It will always come out in the end. Back in the 50’s a friend of my father went to seminary briefly. He came back a told my father that the place was just full of homos.

Every way possible to shine light on this problem is good.

The Church has to feel enough pain that they do what's right. The 'oh so open minded' among Catholics are destroying the Church. God can forgive these priests - but on this world, they need to be treated like the predators they are - and that includes jail time.

We all need to forgive those who have repented - but we can forgive them while they sit in jail just as easily as forgiving them while they play golf...
