I'm just sticking with what Nephi said in one verse vs what he said in the very next one.
I can give you that maybe Nephi found the secret of steel but I doubt that he did. Why have iron when you could have steel. Plus, how to manufacture enough of it for whatever purpose he needed it for. It's a pretty complicated process.
