This article was a pretty good read and while it did highlight the Biblical illiteracy of the RC clergy during the Dark Age, when the RCC was the dominant church. I think it failed to highlight the political element. When Constantine began the transformation of the church in Rome into an arm of the state the political calculations in it's actions became of greater concern than Scriptural literacy.
The Reformation churches did not break this connection between church and state in their quest to return to Scripture as the rule of the faith. If they had they would have been destroyed like all the other Christian Churches that refused to submit to Roman control prior to this.
