First big red flag right there.

At all costs, you do not want someone who would be that dependent on you, even if he was telling you the truth.

If true, that kind of statement reveals to me an insecurity and mental and emotional problems that need professional help.

Knowing its' not likely to be true, it should be clearly recognized as the manipulative tactic that it was.
