Survival, not just of the individual, but of the individual's own society, so that the individual's descendants are also able to thrive. The want to live is what survival is about. Can any society survive, if all its members lived in a gulag? You're slipping "self-preservation" into this as if to make it sound to selfish, when the entire point is about the survival of not just the individual, but the larger community, as a whole. Only the Golden Rule is needed to achieve this.

Humans will suffer greatly to see that their descendants are well-off. Is that selfish?

That could apply to tribalism quite well. Is the value to the survival of one's own? Nazis had that value in spades.

I'm citing extremes here, but just survival doesn't go very far morally, you have add something to get morality. Survival of what kind of society with what kind of values?
