The torture and killings didn't stop until well into the 20th century. The klan killed nearly as many Catholics as Blacks for the crime of being a "Papist" or a "Romanist" or an "RC" (do those terms sound familiar?). The good Protestant citizen of many states killed many Irish immigrants. Care to discuss the Mormon persecutions and lynchings?

We need to make up our mind here NL...Were the religious killing Protestant state ( colonies) sponsored like the RC killings in Europe ? Prove it ...

My point is that Protestant sectarian violence is deeply ingrained in the American culture and lasted well beyond the end of colonial and state religion. It was not a creation of the 19th century.
