Mark, Catholics say Catholics are spiritual Israel. On post after post.

Prove it. We are not replacements for Israel, we are the receivers of the New Covenant. In a way, we might be considered a new Israel, but only from the point of view that God has also extended His Covenant to us - albeit a new one.

It's the "yes we are, no we aren't of the great debate WITHIN Catholic postings. You guys need to decide which one it is, and let us know.

It isn't up to me and it isn't up to Alex. It is up to the Faith of the Church. The Faith says - what? I have offered to take you on a tour of the Catechism, although I'm sure that you look far better than Dante, and I know very well that I couldn't pass for Vergil. I'm taller, for one thing...

This is the first response I have to your post. I'll be back with the remainder in a while.

Please do, and remember me when you have questions, as we previously discussed, rather than post various things at odds with the reality of the Faith....

LOL!

I appreciate your invitation to tour the Catechism, but what is so strange is that what Catholics believe their Church believes varies from one poster to another. The same thing Catholics accuse Protestants of. This is why there is a necessity of having a final authority on beliefs and teachings. For you it is the Catechism, for us it is the Bible. I don't see how there is ever going to be a bridge built over that gulf.

We are not replacements for Israel, we are the receivers of the New Covenant.

"For finding fault with them, he saith, Behold, the days come, saith the Lord, when I will make a NEW COVENANT WITH THE HOUSE OF ISRAEL AND WITH THE HOUSE OF JUDAH. Not according to the covenant that I made with their fathers in the day when I took them by the hand to lead them out of the land of Egypt; because they continued not in m covenant, and I regarded them not, saith the Lord. For this is the COVENANT THAT I WILL MAKE WITH THE HOUSE OF ISRAEL after those days, saith the Lord, I will put my laws into their mind, and write them in their hearts: and I will be to them a God, and they shall be to me a people." (Heb. 8:8-10).

The Catholic Church is the true Israel, because in her the covenants with Israel of old are fulfilled, and the new one exists. However, the Church is neither a replacement for or heir of the geopolitical and historical entity known as Israel. The question which covenants of the Old Testament refer to the Church and which — to the country of Israel and which — to the Jewish people does not have a simple answer, and some aspects of it are open to debate.
