In Christ Alone lyrics

Songwriters: Getty, Julian Keith; Townend, Stuart Richard;

In Christ alone my hope is found He is my light, my strength, my song This Cornerstone, this solid ground Firm through the fiercest drought and storm

What heights of love, what depths of peace When fears are stilled, when strivings cease My Comforter, my All in All Here in the love of Christ I stand

In Christ alone, who took on flesh Fullness of God in helpless Babe This gift of love and righteousness Scorned by the ones He came to save

?Til on that cross as Jesus died The wrath of God was satisfied For every sin on Him was laid Here in the death of Christ I live, I live

There in the ground His body lay Light of the world by darkness slain Then bursting forth in glorious Day Up from the grave He rose again

And as He stands in victory Sin?s curse has lost its grip on me For I am His and He is mine Bought with the precious blood of Christ

"Could we just buy an indulgence like catholics do"

First you would have to understand what an indulgence actually is and then your answer would be clear.

I know, I was a Catholic then. That was so pounded into us! It took awhile to kill ‘all’ those sacred cows. First time I went into a Christian church, I automatically genuflected. Maybe the Catholic don’t even genuflect before going in the pew anymore.

It is buying with works or cash some of the excess merits of Christ and of Mary and the saints.. stored in that Catholic treasury .

The full merit of Christ was applied at the cross.. that is why there is no need for man to purge himself..

The closer you get to the core of Christianity the more you are reviled. Notice how in the Reformed/Evangelical vs. Catholic debates we are personally attacked. In contrast we just point out the Romanist errors.

Ohhhh, I'm sorry, that's not the answer we were looking for. But we do have a lovely parting gift for you.

"An indulgence is obtained through the Church who, by virtue of the power of binding and loosing granted her by Christ Jesus, intervenes in favor of individual Christians and opens for them the treasury of the merits of Christ and the saints to obtain from the Father of mercies the remission of the temporal punishment due for their sins." The Church does this not just to aid Christians, "but also to spur them to works of devotion, penance, and charity" (CCC 1478).

The financial scandal surrounding indulgences, the scandal that gave Martin Luther an excuse for his heterodoxy, involved alms—indulgences in which the giving of alms to some charitable fund or foundation was used as the occasion to grant the indulgence. Contrary to Reformist propaganda there was no outright selling of indulgences.

The Council of Trent instituted severe reforms in the practice of granting indulgences, and, because of prior abuses, "in 1567 Pope Pius V canceled all grants of indulgences involving any fees or other financial transactions" (Catholic Encyclopedia). This act proved the Church’s seriousness about removing even an opportunity for abuses from indulgences.

PROJECTION ALERT:

NL:” What a pity they will never know the joy that comes from putting others ahead of yourself and that Salvation does not mean clawing one’s self into Heaven at the expense of everyone else.”

.
e-s: Could we just buy an indulgence like catholics do?
.

**********************************************************

But since salvation is not a competition, there is no getting it as the expense of others. It demonstrates a gross misunderstanding of what salvation really is.

Since it’s a free gift to all who would believe, nobody gets it at anyone else’s expense.

I think you’re right about the projection alert.

This was confirmed by Pope Paul IV and many others before and after.

One has to wonder how the leaders of the Church would be so astute about such matters.

Are you kidding? I'm assured that no Catholic has paid for an indulgence in at least 500 years. Well, not paid for with coin, anyway.

I just LOVE this part..they confirmed it, so it must be true! There just simply are NO bounds to which the RCCs will go in order to PUSH their agenda. Shameless.

It's a typical reaction of man to light and truth.

Look at the reaction of the pharisees to Jesus.

John 15:18-25 "If the world hates you, know that it has hated me before it hated you. If you were of the world, the world would love you as its own; but because you are not of the world, but I chose you out of the world, therefore the world hates you. Remember the word that I said to you: 'A servant is not greater than his master.' If they persecuted me, they will also persecute you. If they kept my word, they will also keep yours. But all these things they will do to you on account of my name, because they do not know him who sent me. If I had not come and spoken to them, they would not have been guilty of sin, but now they have no excuse for their sin. Whoever hates me hates my Father also. If I had not done among them the works that no one else did, they would not be guilty of sin, but now they have seen and hated both me and my Father. But the word that is written in their Law must be fulfilled: 'They hated me without a cause.'

Jesus upset the religious leaders nice little system of religiosity. They didn't like not being in control any more.
