I am very down on mormonism (but not mormons), but I think the headline is probably true, especially if those “other Christians” are Catholic.

But the phrase “other Christians” is a bit deceptive since Mormonism is not Christian.

Wow, who could have predicted that a liberal, 15 question, meaningless quiz, that isn’t on Christianity, would get so much play towards bashing Christians? Actually I did, the prediction was easy.

the Pew Research Center’s Forum on Religion and Public Life drew after surveying 3,412 Americans.

Who made them the authority? What 3,412 Americans did they survey? What questions were asked? I would say their conclusion is totally wrong.

“Mormons tend to emphasize Mormon scriptures like the Book of Mormon rather than the Bible in their devotional life,” Morehead said in an e-mail.

I think this is actually a misperception and I think the results of the study prove that. As a Mormon, we use both the B of M and the Bible in our teaching and sermons. We study the Bible in 2 out of the 4 years of our revolving Sunday School curriculum, with the Book of Mormon being a 1 year course of study. Of course the Book of Mormon is emphasized as being important. I don't deny that. It is used as a tool for conversion. But I've never heard any of our leaders suggest the Bible should be de-emphasized in our studying.

Bit of a misnomer there in the title, since Mormons are not Christians.

I took their survey and answered 15 of 15 correctly. I did not specify my religion, however. Questions about Vishnu, Ramadan, Nirvana, and the two on LDS might not be normally known by Christians. LDS members might get at least the two questions from their faith more often correct, so I am not sure this is valid.

One of the questions, Where was Jesus born??? That’s easy... Jesus was born in Jerusalem right???

At least that’s what the Book of Mormon says...

I guess this proves that Mormons are smarter and more well-read than other Christians.

“Mormons can answer more Bible questions than their Catholic and mainline Protestant counterparts. “

This is going to come as a huge surprise to some of the anti Mormons around here who use the Bible as a club, picking and choosing Bible verses for their own purposes to suit their own pre-conceived notions.

The Mormons I know are real Bible scholars.

I’m still trying to figure out WHO was surveyed to be classified as “other Christians”. I was not, though I took the shortened version of the quiz on the PEW web site (scored 15 our of 15).

This is like so many other quizes/surveys. Unless we know who was surveyed (how many Methodists, Presbyterians, Anglicans, Baptists, Catholics, Church of Christ, Pentecostal, etc.), there really is no value. Some denominations place a higher value on personal knowledge about the Bible.

This isn’t to say that I will take anything away from Mormons in general - most that I have known in my life took Bible study seriously - more so than many “Christians”.

Fascinating conclusions from the survey:

On questions about Christianity – including a battery of questions about the Bible – Mormons (7.9 out of 12 right on average) and white evangelical Protestants (7.3 correct on average) show the highest levels of knowledge.

Jews and atheists/agnostics stand out for their knowledge of other world religions, including Islam, Buddhism, Hinduism and Judaism; out of 11 such questions on the survey, Jews answer 7.9 correctly (nearly three better than the national average) and atheists/agnostics answer 7.5 correctly (2.5 better than the national average).

Atheists/agnostics and Jews also do particularly well on questions about the role of religion in public life, including a question about what the U.S. Constitution says about religion.

I have to admit, this just cracks me up. It is so-o-o-o-o damn funny to watch as all the little pointy heads (no offense intended to you, zippy) of the Mormon-bashing “christians” explode from cognitive dissonance.
