Mormons (LDS) Know More About Bible Than Other Christians
The Salt Lake Tribune ^ | 09/28/2010 | Peggy Fletcher Stack

Atheists and agnostics know more about major world religions than many people of faith, while Mormons can answer more Bible questions than their Catholic and mainline Protestant counterparts.

Those are among the somewhat startling conclusions about religious literacy in America the Pew Research Center’s Forum on Religion and Public Life drew after surveying 3,412 Americans.

Some of the multiple-choice questions were relatively simple: Where was Jesus born and who led the exodus from Egypt? What religion was Mother Teresa, what day does the Jewish Sabbath begin and what is the name of Islam’s holy book?

Others were more obscure: What is Indonesia’s dominant religion? Which Christians teach that salvation comes through faith alone?

About half the Protestants (53 percent) couldn’t correctly identify Martin Luther as the person whose writings and actions inspired the Protestant Reformation. Fewer than half of Americans (47 percent) knew the Dalai Lama is Buddhist and only 38 percent correctly associated Vishnu and Shiva with Hinduism.

John Morehead, director of the Western Institute for Intercultural Studies in Salt Lake City, had already noted religious illiteracy in the general population as well as in the evangelical community. But he did not expect Mormons to top them in their biblical fluency.

“Mormons tend to emphasize Mormon scriptures like the Book of Mormon rather than the Bible in their devotional life,” Morehead said in an e-mail.

Even some LDS scholars were surprised to find Mormons at the top.

So why are all the mormons I have talked to so ignorant of the bible? Several did not even know what Galatians was!

Besides, no religious survey is complete without these questions..

Which god is bound in the underworld and shakes the earth when snake venom drips on him?

Which blind idiot god dances to the tune of two faceless flutE players?

Which faceless god has bat wings, is black, and lives in the center of the earth? ( No, it ain’t THE ONE!)

Well, you truly are a legend in your own mind. If you knew the Bible you wouldn't be lds.

At least one Mormon freeper became a Christian while arguing with Christians on these threads, he said that he was trying to counter them, but instead became a believer.

Well, there you go.

I doubt very seriously that the opposite has happened.

Sometimes, it only takes one passage of actual Scripture to refute some Mormon errors. Of course, if the anti-Mormons were to bring a dozen Scriptural passages to bear, you'd complain about overkill.

I guess I did it too well...

Actually, just the opposite. Satire that can't ultimately be recognized as satire is poorly done.

Actually there were two Freepers who came out of Mormonism here on FR. We haven’t heard from Sentinel lately.

I wonder how he is doing. Shout out to Sentinel!

Mine didn’t have a question like that. That’s weird. How was it phrased? Do the questions change with each quiz?

No my illusory FRiend. I am not saying that and sorry for causing any confusion.

Jesus himself condemned the ruling elites for perverting the Law to their personal benefit. Take a look at Korban and the abuse of that law’s noble intent.

If a person was to take a course in historical Christianity that was “fair and balanced”, they may not become a Christian, but there is no way they would EVER become, and stay, a mormon. Once the meat of the mormon message was exposed, they would be out.

The mormon message depends on ignorance of the bible and the personality of God as revealed in His word.

“I testify that the Book of Mormon is as valid as the Bible and that the Spirit of the Lord witness is present in all of these documents.”

Again, JUST AN OPINION, and a false one! When you say, “I
testify”, you are signaling JUST an opinion. A false
testimony.

Don’t blame the Mormonic Verses on the Biblical Holy Spirit,
unless you mean the mormon holy spirit - created spirit
being, who never got a real body because he did something
naughty.

The hair on a hobbits foot is more real than
the book of mormonic verses. At least hobbits
are honest.

Hi ampu,

I know there are people who interpret some Bible passages differently from Mormons — and indeed there are different interpretations of scripture between different denominations.

This is why it is so helpful to have additional revelations from God which is what Latter day Saints believe we have. Additional revelation can help make clear some of the parts of the Bible over which there is disagreement and confusion.

We believe that God is not dead, nor does he sleep, and he is revealing his will to mankind through prophets just as he did in earlier days.

Regards,

Normandy

I testify that the BOM is false...and the Bible is the only Word of God.

In the name of Jesus Christ.

So who is being lied to?
