Even if he were sinless, it would have been normal for him to want normal relations with his wife. Sex between a legally married husband and wife is NOT a sin. Sex was God's idea from the beginning. Why would He demand that Mary and Joseph abstain? How would that make them more special or holy than the rest of humanity?
True! It would have been a mockery of marriage. Not a true marriage at all.
I think it stems from the Roman Catholic view that sex is bad or dirty and Mary MUST have abstained.

The perpetual virginity serves no purpose in regards to Jesus and His mission. It does however, reveal a very wrong unbiblical bias towards sex in marriage that adds to the 2 classes of Catholics; those who marry and those holy enough to abstain.

After Constantine, when priests were still allowed to marry, the Roman practice of abstaining from marital relations before a battle came into the church . Priests were ordered to abstain from intimacy with their wives the night before they celebrated Mass. Whether intended or not it sent the message that sex was not a gift of God, but unclean.
