The Jewish priesthood, was a special set aside people that had to be Levites..this had to be documented in genealogies ( see the Book of Nehemiah). Those records were kept in the temple..

The Jews had become corrupt, the priesthood corrupt and the jews divided into sects..

The prophecy of Jesus was fulfilled.. The Roman soldiers tore the temple down brick by brick for gold.. there was not one stone left.. only what today stands as a reminder.. the wailing wall
