Are you aware of any of the Byzantine emperors EVER assuming the title of Pope? No, God forbid. I would say most emperors would have seen that as a step-down.

No, God forbid. I would say most emperors would have seen that as a step-down. But many of them "owned" the Popes and the Papacy.
