In general, idolatry is mistaking the finite for the infinite: for example mistaking a golden calf for god.

Certain Jewish sects and Muslims believe scriptures are dictated by God - and therefore, in Islam for example, you have the worship of the Koran.

Christians believe the infinite God works through the finite man, enters the finite world in this manner among others. But man's hand is not God's hand. Hence, the Bible you read is likely a translation and can have errors, of man, the Bible you read is not infinite, not perfect, not the direct handwriting of God.

Another way of mistake is in the word of God. This is Scripture. However the Word is Jesus. Mistaking the two can also lead to error, again of idolatry.

The third way of error is mistaking oneself for God, perfect in interpretation of God's perfect translation of God's perfect dictation, etc.

We are finite, not perfect. Scripture as we understand it, comes through us imperfect beings. Yes, hopefully guided by the Holy Spirit. I actually agree with the basic Protestant Principle here. However, we cannot assume our own perfection and maintain proper humility in Christ.
