I live off Witchduck Road in Virginia Beach. In 1706, Grace Sherwood was accused of cursing a farmer's crops and labeled the "Witch of Pungo." She was "tested" in the Lynnhaven River at what is now Witchduck Point. She floated and that was proof that she was a witch (had she sunk and drowned it would have meant she was innocent). She was put in jail for several years and eventually released. In 2006 (on the 300th anniversary of her "trial") the governor pardoned her. But 300 years ago those in Virginia (primarily Anglicans) felt perfectly justified in trying her for witchcraft.
