Juvenile graphics aside, I didn't direct the comment at any individual Freeper. However, whomsoever calls a Catholic a "Mary Worshipper" is indeed a liar.

Well, there might have been one or two who took it personally.

However............

I imagine you don't wish to get into the "special" definition of worship as applied to JPII or the semantic differences between "latria" and "hyperdulia" and the inability of the Vatican translators to correctly translate Latin into English. That is fine with me. I'll settle for the definition of "hyperdulia" from an official Catholic source such as the Catholic Catechism or a declared Infallible pronouncement from a Pope or a "unanimous" declaration of a Council. Fair enough?

In the meantime:

Pope Paul VI,

"From the time that we were called to the Chair of St. Peter, we have constantly worked to increase the worship of Mary (culto mariano)" [per il retto ordinamento e sviluppo del culto della beata Vergine Maria - esortazione apostolica di Sua Santita Paolo VII, Page 2]

Is he Catholic?

The whole Trinity, O Mary, gave thee a name...above every name, that at Thy name, every knee should bow, of things in heaven, on earth, and under the earth.” (The Glories of Mary by Bishop Alphonse de Ligouri (Brooklyn: Redemptorist Fathers, p. 260).

The Holy Church commands a worship peculiar to Mary (The Glories of Mary by Bishop Alphonse de Ligouri p. 130).

Many things...are asked from God, and are not granted; they are asked from Mary, and are obtained, for She...is even Queen of Hell, and Sovereign Mistress of the Devils.” (The Glories of Mary by Bishop Alphonse de Ligouri (Brooklyn: Redemptorist Fathers, 1931). pp. 127, 141, 143).

Mary is the co-redeemer, for she participated with Christ in the painful act of redemption. (Catechism of the Catholic Church, 618, 964, 968, 970) “All power is given to thee in Heaven and on earth, so that at the command of Mary all obey-even God...and thus...God has placed the whole Church...under the dominion of Mary (pp. 180-181). Mary is also the Advocate of the whole human race...for she can do what she wills with God” (The Glories of Mary by Bishop Alphonse de Ligouri (Brooklyn: Redemptorist Fathers, p. 193).

The Glories of Mary: "Mary is called the gate of heaven, because no one can enter that blessed kingdom without passing by her" (p.134)

"And shall we scruple to ask her to save us, when 'the way of salvation is open to none otherwise than thru Mary.'" (p.143)

"He who is protected by Mary will be saved; he who is not will be lost." (p.144)

The Glories of Mary: "All power is given to thee in heaven and on earth, and nothing is impossible to thee, who canst raise those who are in despair to the hope of salvation." (p.154)

NOW NOW.

You KNOW how UNFAIR that is.

The RC’s hereon aren’t used to

nor prepared to

nor skilled at

handling the unvarnished TRUTH

. . . particularly when it is so brazenly contrary to their own

pontifically stated personal/official RC dogma—as

documented in their own RC documents.

What are you expecting them to do—die instantly of heart attacks or of incredulity or of appoplexy?

Details, details.....

Come on now. You know that when they say *worship* they don’t really mean worship worship, like the worship they give to God, they just mean adoration and respect worship, like they give to .... uh... Mary and the other saints.

It’s different, you know.

Somehow......

Here, it’s like you use definition #4 instead of definition #2 and somehow, you’re supposed to mystically know when they mean each different definition.

http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/worship

Main Entry: wor·ship

1 chiefly British : a person of importance —used as a title for various officials (as magistrates and some mayors)

2 : reverence offered a divine being or supernatural power; also : an act of expressing such reverence

3 : a form of religious practice with its creed and ritual

4 : extravagant respect or admiration for or devotion to an object of esteem *worship of the dollar*

Yep. Since the English translation does a poor job of translating hyper0-dulia as worship you get your panties in a wad. Read the Latin, understand the difference between veneration and worship and then get back to us.

A Catholic?

Not only A Catholic but a great Catholic. Clearly EITHER he had little to no experience of the recalcitrance of some non-Catholics OR he decided not to let them control the conversation by insisting that he converse according to their rules. In any event, he was not "careful" to moderate his language to theological perfection, because he was writing about devotion, which is at least partially emotional.

Interestingly -- but what will be more interesting is the way the non-Catholics will deride or ignore this -- the so-called "Consecration to Mary" which he recommends has the complete title of Consecration to Jesus Christ THROUGH Mary.

I am on the 13th day of the 33 day devotion. So far, while there is one Marian antiphon every day and today there was a Marian Litany, the majority of the material is about Jesus, His words, or our relationship to Him. Mary most certainly is NOT getting top billing.

But listen: feel free to tell us what we believe. It's not uncommon, when humans meet something they don't understand, for them to take the aggression which arises out of their anxiety out on somebody else. We can handle it. And we'll feel free to know ourselves better than you all do.
