I am rather less charitable then you. I think this guy realized that he didn’t have what it takes to be a successful Christian, so he signed up with the Opposition. He now is a stalwart proponent of the Evil One.
Thanks, metmom. It doesn’t matter what religion I say, because if it’s not Catholic it is dismissed. From this point on, my answer will be I’m a practicing non-Catholic. We shouldn’t have to justify ourselves to a group of people who are NEVER going to Caucus with us, for ANY reason. This has just been 50 questions of nonsense. And like I told narses, if as much time had been spent searching the scriptures as searcing my church, there very well could have been a discovery made about salvation that could change their life. I am also a member of that “universal” body of Christ. Praise the Lord! I know that not all Catholics are so closed off to other Christians. There are some even on Free Republic that are quite charitable and giving. I see them as true brothers and sisters in Christ. God looks at the heart and He knows those that are His.
I don’t trust any of Barna’s polls and that goes for the information they glean from those they classify as Protestants as well. Mostly because the real life experience I have as a Catholic and from what I know of Protestants counters what Barna usually finds out in his polls. Oh and I phrased that badly. I did mean that the unflattering things the polls show about Protestant and their faith practices are in my experience usually patently untrue.
Interesting that he saw things this way, because St. Thomas had a commentary on almost every book of the Bible, and both Summas are full of references to Scripture. That said, Thomism had by the late' 50s being taught as a kind of closed system rather than in the spirit of the Angelic doctor. The technical language was so different from ordinary language it was often no more than jargon, especially when taught to men with a modest grasp of Latin. Also unfortunately as there are secular Jews who no more believe in the teaching of Judaism than a Buddhist does there are secular Catholics who self identify as Catholics without any inkling at all about what being Catholic means in a religious context. They think of Catholic as being a cultural identity not a religious one. Think Pelosi.

I know a few too that I consider friend. An honest broker I can respect even if we differ. Being lied to about beliefs that we clearly know exist, just are an afront to anyone who is trying to carry on an honest conversation about truth. We are called to be instant in season and out to spread God’s Word. If it offends, then truth meters need to be checked. God’s Truth will stand, no matter how it is attacked. I do have one question and I mean it to be respectful. Do you believe that the good a person does arises from his own merits or desires? Or do you believe that any good a person does is a response to the Grace of Christ within him and therefore is not to his boasting but to the glory of God?
As I see it he is —like Luther—bound only by what he perceives to be true, and his rejection of Roman authority is what defines them.
So where does grace play into it then?
Nobody has what it takes to be a *successful* Christian. Without the grace of God, nobody could do it.
