You probably inadvertently clicked on the 'Post Reply' link for his post (#2) rather than on the OP's 'Post Reply' link (#1). That can happen very easily.
If you want to post a comment that's directed at nobody in particular, you can replace the name in the 'To:' box with 'All' or erase it completely.
