The works that are not salvific that the scripture gives us examples of are works done under the Hebrew or any other law (Rm 3:28), or works done in order to boast (Eph. 2:9), or pharisaic works of self-aggrandizing hypocrisy (Mt 23:13, many similar). A desire for salvation is nowhere listed as wrong motivation
